EL SEGUNDO and ALVISO, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DIRECTV, Inc. (Nasdaq: DTV), the nation's leading satellite television service provider, and TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), announced today that they have extended their current agreement, which includes the development, marketing and distribution of a new HD DIRECTV DVR featuring the TiVo(R) service, as well as the extension of mutual intellectual property arrangements.
Under the terms of the non-exclusive arrangement, DIRECTV and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo(R) service for DIRECTV's broadband-enabled HD DVR platform. The product will support the latest TiVo and DIRECTV features and services, including TiVo's Universal Swivel Search and TiVo KidZone. TiVo will develop the new HD DVR for an expected launch in the second half of 2009.
DIRECTV will continue to develop and offer its own portfolio of industry leading set top boxes as primary offerings to both new and existing customers. This new TiVo box will be offered as an alternative choice to those DIRECTV customers who would like to add TiVo to a full line up of DIRECTV services.

I saw that press release last night. Today, I am signing up to switch back to DirectTV. I hope I can get on the TIVO when it comes back, i.e. not too expensive to upgrade.

Oh great! That's the one I'm getting. I hope it is better than Time Warners.
Don't count on it, it's horrible. I haven't read the article yet, but if you can get it and swap for Tivo when it comes out, you'll be fine. But if they say you have to pay to switch it out, then wait.

I've been using my HR20 for so long now I forget why I hated it.
Same here. Though I've liked it more than most, I have since forgotten what little things bothered me about it. That could be due to the perfect arrangement of software updates. That or I'm just easily complacent.
For me, the one feature that turned my hate into love for the HR20 was when they added the "blackout" feature.
If you have your DVR set to record Kings games, for example, and there are 2 showings - one that's blacked out and one that isn't - if it happens to have picked the blacked out broadcast to record, it will automatically search other showings for a broadcast that is not blacked out, and record that instead. That was huge for me since I like to record Dodger games and Kings games by setting up keyword recordings.

Forgive my naivete, but are you serious? If you are being serious, I didn't know about that. Pretty cool.
