I finally did it. I have wanted to get rid of Norton Internet Security for awhile now and finally got the balls to do it. This is my new security profile:
Firewall = My Dell router running WEP encryption. I plan to upgrade this.
Firewall safety net = Windows firewall.
Access = I only run as a limited user, not with administrator privileges.
Anti-virus = AVG 8.0. I use this on my work computer and really like it.
Spy ware = Spybot
Spy ware = Lavasoft Adaware
Browser = Firefox with NoScript add-on.
Computer was instantly faster after removing Norton. Am I an idiot? I have read that a lot of people (Leo Laporte) feel safe with this setup but I feel like I am surfing without a condom.

Um, outside of my home router that's WAY overkill for the regular human, I don't have to run any of that crap.
Then again, my OS requires that you type your Admin password before you can install ANYTHING....
I have my router firewall, avast anti-virus. That's it, and the anit-virus is probably overkill. No problems, ever. If you use your brain, you don't need a lot of software to protect you from yourself.

Fixed. Haven't used any protection in years and not had a single problem. I'm amazed people are still so paranoid about being infected by a virus.
It's not paranoia. I fight viruses and spyware scams on a weekly basis. People without scanners are often very surprised to see the list of quiet little in the background things that get taken out of the machine when they do get scanned.

Maybe you should use a third-party firewall instead of the Windows firewall. I haven't used the Windows firewall so far, but I'm not too sure if it's effective.
Try this online firewall test, it will tell you whether your firewall is effective or not.
I use a ZoneAlarm firewall, Lavasoft Adaware and a freeware virus scanner...did not have any grave problems so far *knock on wood*.
But as you guys said, the best protection are activated brain cells. If you regularly download stuff from .to websites, you shouldn't be too surprised if your system is infected. If you don't download from shady websites, a few freeware tools will do the trick and will keep your system safe.
