One of the producers I work with bought an SSD MacBook Air that he asked me to "optimize" for him. I humored him, but spent most of my time test driving it for myself.
I didn't see much of a difference between it's performance and my MBP. I saw maybe a 10% improvement of battery life. It may not be a fair comparison since it's my laptop is not a MacBook Air, though.
Plus when he got one of the first releases, he paid quite a lot for his SSD. And from Apple. Ouch.
Looking forward to seeing how you implement your drive, and it's performance.

I only bought one drive, so it'll be just a single drive for now, but I would like to get a 2nd drive and go RAID0 with them. But for now I'll have that and a 6x500GB RAID5 for storage. Gonna setup Windows 2008 Server for my OS, which runs pretty nice. That should take care of my storage needs, now I need to upgrade from my Cyrix 133.

I thought one of the reasons for developing a SSD was not only for no moving parts but for the faster READ and WRITE times making raid arrays not necessary for speed. Accessing a SSD should be almost as fast as accessing RAM.

When you use RAID0, you stripe the data over multiple drives. So instead of 1 drive doing all of the read/writing, it will read/write the data on multiple disks.

I'm with Len-Det64 on this one. I don't think you will see much, if any performance improvement striping SSDs.

I know what raids do. That wasn't what I was saying. The reason to do a raid0 array is to speed up your read and write times for better overall performance. With a SSD drive there shouldn't be a need to do a raid0 array because the performance is already built into the drive. You also shouldn't have to worry too much about overusing your drive because there aren't any moving parts in it.

I think these drives are great for laptops. I have a Dell D430 with the 64gig solid state drive and I am extremely happy with it. The boot time is much faster than my other laptops--and this laptop has a fairly low performance processor because it is so small and light. I hate waiting for laptops to boot when I am in a rush. I also like the fact that you don't have to worry about bumping the computer when it is running. I used a Toshiba Protege R500 laptop for a while that had a 120 gig HD with drop protection and it was a pain in the ass. Everytime I moved the laptop the drop sensor would kick in.
