Default Question about dvd upconversion players

So, i just ordered a 37" 1080p Sharp Aquos tv. Is it worth it to get a dvd player with the 1080 upconversion? What exactly does that do? Will it really make that much of a difference on my old dvds than watching it on a standard dvd player?

It absolutely is worth it and you will see a significant upgrade in picture quality from standard DVD players.

DVDs were not designed for high def TV... Upconverters bridge the gap a bit and as I said do definitely look good.

However, its worth noting that blu-ray on 1080p is miles better...

Cool, thanks for the quick answer, guess I should have picked up the player at costco toady. I really didn't think there would be that much of a difference, can't wait to see it though!

Blu-Ray is quite a bit out of my price range and it would suck to have to re-buy all of my dvds.

I agree with you whole heartedly, Blu-Ray is way too expensive of a hobby... it truly is amazing though, and weekly ads are making building a collection a bit easier these days (Solid movies for $15 instead of $25)... still, I own 400+ DVDs so I'm in no hurry to move.

I was skeptical about upconverting players myself... sold them at Circuit City just fine with the standard pitch, but I didn't know what the difference would be. Got one for myself (and mind you I only have a 32 inch 720p Element TV, bottom of the barrel as hi-def TVs go) and the color and detail was NOTICEABLY sharper. Considering the Sharp 1080p is a beautiful set AND you'll be getting a 1080p upconverter instead of just a 720 one, I imagine the jump will be even more spectacular for you. I don't want to make it sound like it'll be a million times better, but you will certainly see the difference.

Just a few things to keep in mind;

- Like other technologies, the better name brands (Samsung, Sony, etc) are going to put out a better product. Since you are staying away from Blu-Ray for the foreseeable future this will be your go-to movie player; as such I'd recommend spending the extra $30 - $50 getting the best 1080p converter in your price range and not something by Zenith or something.

- Along the same lines, make sure you get the proper cables! Component (Red Blue Green) at the very least, but again, the extra $20+ or so for an HDMI cable for maximum efficiency may be the way to go.

Enjoy!

Thanks again, I'm probably going to go with this Sony one from Costco at first:
Costco - Sony DVD Player w/ HDMI Output
I'm only buying electronics from Costco now as their service/return/warrranty stuff can't be beat. This one comes with an HDMI cable as well so I won't have to order another one through monoprice.

I have a bunch of DVDs as well, tons of them, so even at $15/each, that would be crazy to replace.

Now I'm just waiting for the TV to get here, hurry up Costco!!

Blu-Ray players all play standard DVD's so there is no rush to replace all of the standard DVD's. They also up-convert. However, since it is out of your budget at this time.. save your pennies!!! It is SO worth it. Harry Potter on BD >>>> Lord of the Rings upconverted. Not only that, but the audio tracks on BD ****ING ROCK!!!!

And someone is selling a up-converting DVD player with an HDMI cable? Hmm. I wonder if that is Costco specific, so there is no price matching!!! (Quick check on the nets seems to indicate so!!!).

Congrats on the 1080p!!!! Now call Verizon!!!!

edit - I need somehow, someway to convince my wife that we need a 1080p TV, or a way to break our current 720p TV!!!! Does anyone know of a simple way I can break the light engine on a JVC HD-52G886?

Yea, I saw it at costco yesterday. It said that the HDMI cable was included inside the box. I have to go back and buy it now.

Thanks, I gotta talk to my roommate about DirecTV or maybe Verizon. I don't know if he'll want it though, since he has the Phone, Internet, and Cable plan all-in-one with TWC right now.

I'm trying to sell my Hitachi 57" RP HD on craigslist right now. Hoping to get 500 for it, but we'll see. You can accidently kick something through your JVC.

hmmm.. That one may be too obvious. However, I wonder if I can kick the back without cracking the case??

I am going to try to put the TV on my 2009 upgrade list. Right now, the only thing on my upgrade list for 2009 is to find 4 new rear speakers to better match my 20 year old JBL LX-55 fronts.

Well if you really want, I'm sure you can take off the panel in the back of the tv where all the inputs go and start hacking away at the wires. Of you can convince her to let you sell this tv while you can still get some value out of a rear-projection tv.

There is not that much of a difference of using the component outputs of a dvd player to a hdmi/dvi output but you will definitely being taking advantage of the best picture possible using the HD imputs on your set.
Combine that with a Blu Ray DVD player and HD really shines. Im just glad the Blu Ray / HDDVD war is over early. With Blu ray the winner we can all move on an concentrate on content instead of format. I suggest that your first Blu Ray player should be a Playstation 3. As prices are coming down but BR players are still in the 3-500 range. And you can buy a Playstation 3 blu ray equiped for $399 and i hear the price is gonna drop near xmas this year. So why not have a awesome Video game console(NHL2k & NHL09 anyone) as well as a dvd player.
