Freezing the HD (or anything, for that matter) will result in contraction, so some defective pieces could be placed back together and functioning again after a freeze. Of course, YMMV with this one.

Your only supposed to put it in the freezer for about 15 to 20 minutes.

And putting it in the sunlight will cause the bits and pieces to heat up and expand, and if they are defective, that's not a good idea.

If you try the freezer trick a couple of times, and then try the jumpstart method I described, and you can't get it to spin up and get anything off it as a secondary drive source, you're probably out of luck.

Check to see if the connectors are still intact... I have a couple of drives that have a habit of sliding in the internal enclosures...and disconnect every now and then... I hope it's as simple as that...

BTW...I'm using three Acomdata enclosures for my "externals"...and found that to be the problem in my case...
