How do iPods sync? or rather what folder do you guys drop your mp3s into so that your iPod automatically syncs it? I have dropped both folder containing mp3s and mp3s themselves inside the my documents /iTunes /iTunes Music folder and iTunes will not sync them and load them onto the iPod. Am I missing a step?
As soon as I figure this out then the ultimate goal will be to move the folder over to an external harddrive and have the iTunes sync from the external harddrive as there is more room on that one than there is on the harddrive on the laptop.
All help will be greatly appreciated. I cannot figure out what the hell I am doing wrong. Isn't it supposed to just auto sync after yhou have dropped the folders into the iTunes folder?

thanks,
Your iTunes library (the database file) has no idea that those files exist. So try the following:
1.) Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General > Select "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"
That should do it for you. It will create new files that will be stored in your iTunes Music folder. (This is the folder you can move to an external drive later and have iTunes point to it.)

Just to expand on the answers above (and this is one of my favorite things about iTunes) - when you add a song to the iTunes library, with the default setting iTunes creates and names the appropriate folder and puts the right songs in there all automatically.

As long as all the ID3 tags are right. Otherwise it will make a mess.
iTunes used to have the option of having it look for music in any folder you specify, not just something named iTunes Music or whatever. Is this yet another thing that changed in later versions? I'm sure that one at least 2 of my computers I still have it set up that way and I've upgraded to the most recent version.

I'm pretty sure you can point to ANY folder. But I was just trying to keep it simple for him. It is Hatter, after all. I mean Butter.
