This is the most retarded thing I have heard from Apple. To use the 64-bit Kernel in Snow Leopard you have to hold down the "6" and "4" key during boot. otherwise it defaults to the 32-bit kernel.
64-bit Snow Leopard defaults to 32-bit kernel | Apple - CNET News At least with Windows when you install the 64-bit OS you actually get a 64-bit OS. Same with *NIX.

The reason behind it defaulting to 32-bit makes sense. It will definitely limit the already expected high call volume with a new OS release. (As new as it can be.)

The dot one release will make it a default setting, I would bet.

That would be a good thing to do but you have to wait for an update before you can utilize your system to its fullest? But then again this was done by design until they figure out how to make the 32 bit drivers work in a 64-bit kernel.

My point been you have to hold down 6 and 4 to get the 64-bit kernel when you are buying a 64-bit OS is retarded.
For instance with Windows 64 bit it will run 64 bit and 32 bit software just fine including drivers. Apple can figure that one out?
Seriously that is like buying a Ferrari and only getting to use 4 of the 8 cylinders unless you do something special when starting it up.

Ummm . . . no. You have to hold the "6 and the 4" before you can utilize your system to its fullest.

Dude, come on:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64'

Can I boot Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode? Your Mac Guy (and more)

Do you even own a mac?

Stop being such a UNIX guy. Mac users tend not to understand the command line. you know that!

Those same users would tend to not understand the difference between 32 and 64 bit computing, nor care about it.

What they want, is for their computer to work (compatibility), which is why 64 was turned off by default.
