This is the one I bought six months ago. Definetly look into it. Not many 50" 1080p (Full HD) TV's at this price. The picture is awesome. Audio isn't as good but if you have surround sound, it's no biggie.
We are getting surround sound, so that isn't a problem. What is the difference between flat screen and projection? This is definitely the size we want in the price range we want-- what's the catch?! LOL

Good question. A projection TV is a bit bigger in size. There is a lamp inside a projection TV just like you would have in a projector. It takes about a minute for the screen to fully turn on. The real catch is that the lamp will need to be replaced after a certain amount of time. This was a concern for me at first until I found out that this particular lamp lasts 8000 hours which means that if you watch a lot of TV, it'll still last you about 3 years before you have to replace the lamp. A replacement costs about $200 so you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to spend that much every few years. IMO, it is especially with the quality of picture you are getting. Also, take note that there is no screen burn-in with this TV and little glare from sunlight. It has a lot of inputs as well including 2 HDMI's.

HDMI cables are what you'll want to use for the best HD signal possible. There's RCA (basic low end cables) and Component (a notch above which does HD though not as well as HDMI). HDMI does both audio and video through just one cable rather than three separate cables like the other two although if you are getting a surround sound system, you'll probably use a different cable for the audio anyway. An optical cable for example. Don't be fooled by really expensive HDMI cables. Places like Best Buy have some that are over $100. Look around online and you can probably get one for about $10-$20. I got mine for $40 but I went to Target for it. Here's more info on HDMI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
Unfortunately I don't have DirecTV so I don't know if their setup includes any HDMI inputs. I have Charter digital cable and they don't have that option. My use for HDMI is for my Playstation 3 which I mainly use as a Blu-ray player. It up-converts standard DVD's as well. The TV itself though can handle all these things that you're looking for.
Just wait until you finally watch HD hockey. You won't even be paying attention to the game for a while because you'll just be focused on all the detail that you can see.

When I telll Directv I'm moving and upgrading, I'll enquire about HDMI. Thank you so much for all this information. We would've been lost without it.
I completely believe what you are saying. I've never actually watched anything on HDTV.. no one I know has one. I might actually start Watching the Mets next month... <shakes head>.. the only thing the Mets are normally good for is helping me take a nap

If you plan on buying a TV very soon, go for it. Check online for the best prices and don't forget to check Costco and Sams Club ( as they have good deals and coupons too )
BUT, if you do not mind waiting until the end of november, there is no doubt hands down a better time to by a TV then black friday ( the day after thanksgiving ) I bought my 42" 720p Panasonic Plasma for $999. ( I believe retail was $1499-1699 at that time) You might have to wait in line for a very long time, but the deals are worth it!

No problem. Good luck. I know it's a big decision. Also forgot to mention that the TV is $300 cheaper than when I bought it 6 months ago.
