the hdmi does indeed make a difference. but the brand does not. and i wouldn't buy it at circuit city or stores like that. their accessories are f***ing marked up!

You have to have a TV thats HDMI compatible in order to upgrade to hd/dvr
Your HDMI signal flow will only be as good as the the older version of your HDMI cable/device.
Even if your TV's HDMI is an older version (1.2), your HD-DVR is 1.3, and your HDMI cable 1.3, the TV's older version will "dumb down" to v. 1.2 and the features that v. 1.2 manage.
To have all of "benefits" of using a certain HDMI profile, all of your devices must be equal or greater than the desired version.

It makes a big difference for some things (like gaming, and direct input devices), but for cable, it hasn't made a lick of difference over component cables. The signal quality is so bad with Time Warner that it doesn't really matter (at least to my eyes).
I guess you could always try it out, and if it's no different to you, you could return it possibly.

One of the main benefits is having one cable to handle audio and video instead of using 4-5 cables going component and analog/optical audio.
If you have 3 HDMI components, I'd rather have just 3 cables instead of 12-15. (And I do.)
I haven't seen much difference between component and HDMI on my TV. We just got a plasma set downstairs, so I'll see if that makes any difference.
