Toshiba to give up on HD DVD, end format war:
I really doubt that Toshiba is going to come out and say "Well, we lost the format war, HD-DVD is dead".
What I think will happen is that Toshiba will not release a 4th generation HDDVD player, and will at some point, announce a series of Dual Format players. The high end will be based off of the XA-2, while there will be an A-35 based dual format format player.
XF-1 - will include a Reon HQV for upscaling. All audio formats bitstreamed and decoded. Will also have 7.1 analog outputs. BD 2.0 complaint. MSRP - $499 - 599
F-1 - Will not have the Reon nor the 7.1 analog outs. For true multi channel support, the advanced audio will be bitstreamed, but for the smaller bedrooms or guest room, there will be 2.0 analog output. BD 2.0 compliant. MSRP $349 ($299????).

That's just it with them. Their first Blu-box needs to be 2.0 compliant. They're already behind the curve regardless of when they release a combo/BR unit.
But if you believe the word for word quote from the unknown source, Toshiba is getting out of the next gen disc market.

****, if they can't release a BD 2.0 compliant machine* then they should get out of the CE business. Their HD-DVD's already have the network port, they just need to up the memory or add a USB port. Java is the bitch, though.

Eff those fire sales. I'll wait for Uni to put out Hot Fuzz and the Bourne series on Blu-ray with NEW encodes that take advantage of the 50gbs and not HD DVD's 30 Gigs.

I just want to know if the blue ray copy of a movie that I decide to buy takes advantage of the blue ray technology. I'd be pissed if I bought a movie and realized that it was just a crappy DVD quality transfer.

They might be best off getting a stake in blu-ray and using their resources to advance the technology.
Is there a good website reports on the quality or lack thereof of HD transfers to blue ray disc? I just want to know if the blue ray copy of a movie that I decide to buy takes advantage of the blue ray technology. I'd be pissed if I bought a movie and realized that it was just a crappy DVD quality transfer.
They're severely straight shooters on all fronts: movie itself, picture quality, audio quality, extras, and HD exclusives.
This is where I go to see if I'm on the fence about getting a title on standard DVD or BR. I'm usually in agreement with their assessments of PQ and AQ. If I'm not in agreement, it's usually because they were too harsh/critical of something, which is good. I've never had an issue where they were wrong in a bad way and bought something of lesser quality than what they rated.
I don't know if dgrygan, NastiMarvasti*, or any of the other guys pay attention to High Def Digest's reviews, but I never buy a title without checking with them first. They review 99.8% of the domestic Blu-ray and HD DVD titles that are released.
*I'm sure NM and his co-workers check it out as they want to see what folks think about all of their hard work. So, he may have some other sites that could be of some use.
But for me, HDD is a one-stop shop: review and a forum of fellow BR lovers choke full of good talk.

Maybe, but it just seems to be a very small and finite market, at this point in time to devote those kinds of resources too.

Keep in mind, there are some of us with wives who for the life of them can not figure out which disc goes in what player!!! Instead of going "Honey, the red ones go here, the blue ones go over here, and the old ones you can play anywhere" I, uh I mean those who have wives like that can say "They all go here!".

Buy an HD DVD player when it gets cheapo, and sock it away in the closet. If the wifey doesn't know what she's doing, shun her from touching the gear.
If that doesn't work, consider BadIdea's option.

Should my combo player die, will I buy a new one? Don't know. I do like the Reon, and I am not about ready to try the Realta on the Denon 3800. I'll cross that bridge when if I ever get there, and it would depend on a lot of factors, such as the size of my HDDVD collection when the combo player dies. I am going to jump on some HDDVD's during the firesales; movies that don't really take advantage of the extra capacity of BD.
I do have an A2 socked away in the closet. I am thinking of sending it to Lousiville when the kid gets his rental for next year (as well as all of my old gear that didn't survive the 2008 Upgraditis Flu).

Not "How much did this cost", or "Why do we need this", or "Well, if you're getting this, I am getting that.. ". In fact, the LC-2 was installed while she was in France, and upon her return she said "Oh, that's new".
I am now prepping here for the 2009 upgrade, when I ditch the 720p JVC for a plasma of some sort. Leaning Kuro, but who knows. I looked at some TV's today (not to buy) and I liked the plasma over LCD.
I am all setup for 1080p, except for the TV. I could sneak in a JVC 1080p D-ILA, if it was 52" inches and has the silver speakers.
