About This Page: This is a discussion on Computers/Tech/Photo within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Hello Fellow LGKers. I have a computer problem and I'm hoping that someone here can shed some light on what my problem is.

Hello Fellow LGKers. I have a computer problem and I'm hoping that someone here can shed some light on what my problem is.
First off, my computer is custom built by my cousin. This was about 2 years ago, so it's not too new by all means. When the computer is on, the light on the front shines nice and blue. A few months ago, the computer couldn't turn on. When you press the power button. It'd make a whirring sound for 2-3 seconds before shutting off completely. I changed the power supply and it worked fine.
Last night, I was at the Honda Center for a WWE Live Event. I came home and my computer's light was red instead of the usual blue. This is the 1st time I've seen it red colored. I moved my mouse to get out of "idle" state, but nothing happened. Nothing was responding. I tried to hold the power button to get it to turn off, but it wouldn't. So I had to hit the power switch that's plugged in the wall.
Anyhow. I opened the case and tried to find the source of the problem. The fan is running, the computer sounds you hear normally is there. But the keyboard isn't on and the monitor is acting as if my computer is off. That dreaded red light just isn't going away. I've tried the search engines but most responses I see is just "power supply" related problems. I know I'm probably not searching correctly, but I don't know where to begin.
So here I turn for help. Hopefully you guys know what could possibly be the problem so that I can inspect it and see where I could get with this problem. I'm by no means a computer expert, so I might be stumped! I already e-mailed my cousin the problem (since he built it, he might know) but he hasn't responded yet. But more opinions could never hurt. Thanks for taking your time in reading this post.

Replace the power supply again. If that doesn't do it, you are probably looking at a motherboard replacement. Expect to spend around $150-$300 depending on the quality of the parts. The power supply is easy to replace, but the motherboard can be a bit tricky since Windows may freak out when you boot the computer for the first time. Here is a link that may help you through the process.

I would agree with this, but be careful if you decide to run out and buy a motherboard.
One of my home built computers died, and it was about 2 years old. I had a real blast trying to find a S939 based motherboard. Really, it was fun. The ones I found were refurbished.
So not only did I have to replace the motherboard (socket AM2), I had to replace the CPU and memory as well.
You would have to know what Processor socket your current motherboard has before buying a new one motherboard.
It could be motherboard, but are you getting any interesting beep codes when you first power on (also check that your cousin hooked up the case speaker so you could hear any beeps if they happed), or it just isn't doing anything at all? It is also possible that your video card gave up the ghost and as a result your machine is halting on post.
Could be a mobo. Before you go out and buy a new one try resetting the bios. You would be surprised how many times this will fix a problem. I've also had luck unplugging the power source from the wall, removing the battery, and letting the capacitors drain out (really just another way to clear CMOS but it has worked on occasion when the jumpers don't). If you have to buy one with an older socket check ebay or get a refurb from newegg.
Actually you should trying reseting the CMOS by pulling the battery and moving the jumper to the reset position. If you say your monitor is not turning on you mght want to check your video card and monitor as well.

Just tell your cousin to fix the f***in computer they built
This is why I don't like building for others, unless I am real clear about what I will do and what I won't do when it comes to repairs, especially after one year.
Thank you for all the replies!! Life can be boring as hell without a computer. It's made me realize just how much time I spend reading forums... lol. Plus there's nothing good on TV in the summer. Ridiculous.
Anyway, I got a response from my cousin and I think from the sound of it, he doesn't want to be bothered to fix it. I don't know one thing about fixing the motherboard problem. The link was great though Creeping Death, but it's way way too complicated for me.
I did what Die Radio Die said, and I decided to order a Dell. But I won't be expecting it until around August 6-8... which is ridiculously slow! >_< So I gotta find a way to survive the next 2 weeks, as pathetic as that sounds.
Just a question. Is it possible to grab the old hard drives (I had 3 hard drives in the custom built computer) and somehow plug it into the new one? I have some music there, and lots of family photos that I would like to recover.
What has me most annoyed is my AIM Screen Name. The one I've been using for 5+ years. I totally forgot the password, and the e-mail I had registered with it long ago doesn't seem to exist anymore. So I can't figure out my password (whatever I put) or can't even get an email that gives me a new temporary password.
