Hey guys. I don't know where to look for this type of information. I guess my wording isn't correct when I'm trying to search for it. Hopefully some of you guys can help me out here.
First things first. I don't have to handle the cell phone bills, my uncle does with his family plan. But we are with At&t/Cingular but will probably switch back to T-Mobile in November/December.
Now, my cell phone works fine. The same goes for my sister. But for my mom, her cell phone hardly ever gets a signal around the house.
I can get 4-5 bars in most places around my home. My mom can barely get 1-2 bars and more than half the time, there's no signal. So when people call her cell phone, it doesn't ring. Plus she can't really call out either since it'll say "Call has failed".
I thought this could be that my mom's phone was a hand me down from my uncle and that it's been 3-4 years now. So I got her a new phone. A Motorola Razr v3xx phone. But the same crap is still going on with my mom's phone.
Is it the sim card? The card looks like it's in good condition and everything, so I hope that's not the problem there. So what exactly is the problem? Any ideas would be great, I'm stumped because I don't know too much about cell phones.
I'm just confused as to why my sister and my phone works, and my mom's doesn't. We're all under the same family plan, in the same area, so I don't know what is wrong. Thanks for your time.

what kind of phones do you have? traditionally SonyEricsson, Nokia and the Moto Razr have better reception than most. It could be the SIM but highly unlikely. IF she has a 3g phone, that could also answer some questions. I need more info
My cell phone is the Samsung SGH-c417 model. The basic kind. That's the one with no problem since I can get 4-5 bars around my house most of the time.
My sister has the older Motorola Razr Phones. I'm pretty sure it's a V3 though, the pictures seem to match it the most.
The phone that my mom was using that hardly received any signal looked something like a Samsung V205. This was the hand me down, that was about 3-4 years old. The new one is a Motorola Razr v3xx. I did look and it says 3g behind the v3xx.
Is that the info that you needed? I have no idea if my sister's Razr phone is a 3g, but her signal on the phone is fine as well.
It's only the new and old phone that my mom has, that the signal doesn't seem to work at all at home.
if she has a Razr V3 adn is having reception issues I would tend to agree with KT OR it just be a bad phone. If its new its under warranty, call and do an exchange by mail or take it in adn swap it if its under 30 days. Also check behind the battery for a little red or pink dot. If you have one they are an indication that moisture has compromised the phone.
My mom's old phone, and new one. Never dropped, shouldn't be wet.. nothing. I'm definitely stumped.
About an hour ago, I took out the batteries from my mom's new phone and took out the sim card again. When I put the sim card back, I made sure it's "in". I thought maybe it was loose, who knows.
No moisture on the battery (red/pink dot) or anything. So hopefully it's not a faulty phone. I mean, this is the same problem as her old phone. It's frustrating, because when I have the phone on, she's getting 2-3 bars easily. But whenever I try to call her or call out on her phone, the signal goes dead.
It just keeps saying "searching" every so often. It only seems like when it's lying on the table, it has 1-2 bars sometimes.
I'm going to have to bend his ear for an upgrade suggestion soon... my phone is quickly failing.

Do you live in the same house as your mother and sister? You mentioned that you live in the same AREA... but didnt specify whether its the same home. You also mentioned a switch from Cingular back to TMobile... which means you switched from TMo to Cingular somwhere along the line.
If you dont live in the same house, it could be there is some topography blocking the signal from her nearest tower thus creating a shadow or a "hole" in the network. This would explain why your mother is the only one with the issue and why its happened only in her house and with two different phones... the phones might not have been the problem. If TMo has a tower in her area in a different spot, it might have a clearer shot into her house than the Cingular site. That would also explain if she had a good signal with TMo and doesnt have good luck with Cingular.
Of course, I could be way the hell off base.

I still live at home with my mom. So that's why I'm even more stumped. I'm in Monrovia. My uncle (who pays for the cell phone bills and we're in the same family plan with him), he lives in San Gabriel.
We all originally had T-Mobile with the sim cards and whatnot. He made the switch to At&t, so we're all under the same stuff.
For me, personally... I think At&t blows compared to T-Mobile. With some bad signal, my call will drop in an instant.
But here, I'm talking about me, my sister, and my mom all under the same roof. All of our phones in the living room area, and only my mom's phone is hardly getting any signal.
I have a phone you can use to test her signal. All you need to do is get the phone from me adn put here SIM in it. If it works its the phone. Of course you can do that with you phone too. I have plenty laying around just le me know which carrier adn you can use it for a few days. I am in San Dimas and will be in Monrovia later today, though you may get this too late I will be there at 3:15
