Since I don't use my Mac all that much, (probably an hour a day during the week, and five or more on weekends) I've been shutting it down after each use.
But my boss at work who owns a Mac says they like to be ON or asleep, that it's better for them than turning them off all the time.
So I need your opinions. What should I do? Does it really matter if I'm leaving it on or not? (BTW I've already calibrated it).
Your boss is full of ****. It's not "better" to leave it on all the time unless you don't want to wait for it to boot. I leave mine on all the time because Im constantly walking away and coming back to it, but it's certainly no better or worse to turn it off, and it I was only using it a few times a week, I would definitely turn it off.
Shutting it down really won't impact the performance of your macbook. I sleep my powerbook purchased in 2004 during the day and shut it down at night. No problems. Don't worry about it.
slightyly off topic....good luck keeping it clean. I regret buying a white laptop. It look great when new and stayed that way for a year but as time has gone on...not so good.

The school where I work has about thirty OLDer white ones and I've seen how they can get dirty. Luckily, these newer models have a different plastic on the inside that's seemingly more clean-friendly, definitely better against dirt and oil. But the outside is the same. I'll just have to be tidy.
The mac runs some maintenance scripts in the middle of the night, when it assumes that you are not using your computer. It runs daily, weekly, and monthly scripts, which it cannot run if the computer is off. They include cleaning up and emptying caches, and some other stuff that I just don't remember. That may be what your boss was referring to when he suggested leaving it on.
You can also run this scripts manually through the Terminal, or with other apps, if you don't want to leave your mac running all the time. I'm not really sure how much the scripts actually help, or exactly what they do, but I assume they should be run regularly.

OP--have you seen the third-party snap on plastic covers? I have the red one and like alot. Looks good on my black macbook but would be even better on a white.
It's been months now and the one I use seems fine. All the vent holes match up perfectly, and I can't notice any difference in heat from when I used it without. It's hot regardless.
But even if it were true--and I'm sure it is in some cases--I'd risk flaming pubes and melting skin with the cover rather than be seen in public with a white lapper. You boys do know that's a girls machine, right? It's the white convertible cabrio of the computing world!!

I've seen them but never wanted to put one one. Also...I have no problem stepping out with my white lapper. I will go black next time though.
