I just got my first iPod this Xmas, so I'm new to the game. I know that iPod adapts to only one computer and you can only transfer songs with that computer using iTunes. But, I have a laptop also and might want transfer songs with that too.
Anyone know of some third party software that's similar to iTunes, is compatible with an iPod, but doesn't restrict you to one computer to transfer MP3s? Any help is appreciate. Thanks!
I use the full version of Winamp to get all my mp3s to my iPod. Works like a charm. What it won't do, however, is upload video or track and download podcasts for you the way iTunes will.
I know with iTunes, you can authorize up to 3 computers with your account, but be careful because should something happen, like a computer crash, and you no longer have any more authorization, you will have to plead with Apple in getting a new authorization. I don't know of any other program out there, but I would recommend gettting an external hard drive and transferring it to your other computer, thats what I've done and so has my nephew.
That actually isn't true, Brian. If you set it to disk use/manual upload you can plug it into any computer you wish and upload songs from, the only downside is mac to pc. im not sure which way it is, but if your ipod is formated for one and try to plug it in to the other your whole ipod could be erased.
i have a pretty hefty library of about 17,000 songs that i could say upload to your ipod if you wanna gimme your pod at one of our games and i could bring it back to you the next week

Just to expand a little...
If your ipod is going to be used on a mac AND a PC, initialize it on the PC, because Macs can read/write to PC disks, but PCs cant read/write to Mac disks without third party help.
Also, RE: authorizing computers through iTunes. The above info is incorrect. YOu can actually authorize up to 5 computers to be able to use protected songs/movies bought through itunes. If you reach your limit, and still need to authorize another computer, you can VERY EASILY deauthorize all your current computers using a preference in iTunes, which will then allow you to authorize up to 5 computers again. (You will have to reauthorize the other computers, but that is pretty easy to do) There is no limit to how many times you can deauthorize all your computers. The whole thing takes about 15 seconds tops.
