Alright, rather than start a new thread every time I watch/hear about/get a boner over some Asian movie, I'm going to just post in this thread. It'll be like Hatter's undying Album Of The Day thread or gescom's electronic music freaks thread. Maybe. Obviously participation for any/all is welcome.
Anyway, I just found out that Yoji Yamada's Love & Honor is getting some theatrical dates in So Cal.
It'll be playing at the Laemmle in Beverly Hills and in Old Pasadena starting September 5th and hopefully will spread to a few others a little afterwards. Nothing else is up on the Laemmle website, but I'll keep an eye out.
Yoji Yamada, the director, is probably best known for his two previous samurai dramas, The Twilight Samurai (which was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film oscar a few years ago) and The Hidden Blade. Both are REALLY ****ing good samurai movies without a whole lot of "action".
It stars Takuya Kimura, who's probably best known for being the Japanese dude in 2046.
It's got an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and though I haven't seen it yet (waiting paid off AGAIN!?!?), I am certain that it will be excellent. Check out the official website for the trailer and such.
Sorry, man. Couldn't resist! At any rate, I might some time in the future bring a more serious anime flavor to the discussion. There are many awesome stories being told in animated film coming out of Japan, I think.

Was able to catch this in the theatre a couple months ago in Honolulu. It ran for a surprising several weeks. REALLY enjoyed it.

Now your just ****ing with me. Chungking Express is one of my favorite movies of all time! OUTSTANDING film to be sure, but Faye Wong stole my heart and never gave it back. I've watched my DVD copy several times, but would LOVE to see it in the theater.

I've seen it on the big screen a couple times.
But, no, it's just a Criterion release on DVD/Blu-Ray, that one.
However, Wong Kar Wai fans can get excited about a theatrical release of the Ashes Of Time Redux in October...
Is it considered an Asian film if it's just directed by an Asian?
If so, then I just saw "My Blueberry Nights".
Excellent cute movie. Simple yet profound. Now I want to bake my own blueberry pie.
Dr. Naysay should love this movie. It's got two of his favorite Jewish ladies.
