That was a cheap shot. It is better than Year Zero but someone needs to get Trent some black tar to get him back to his Pretty Hate Machine/Downward Spiral days.
It's gotta be hard to follow up on genius work like that.
After a couple of listens, I can safely say I'm digging it. It's no masterpiece or anything, but it's certainly more than solid, especially considering it was made in, what, 2-3 weeks? I like Ghosts more though, if not only because it was a big departure from the NIN song structure (while expanding, but not alienating it's sonic roots). I said this after Ghosts came out, but I think the point is even more poignant now; just imagine what the next record will sound like if he even puts 6 months worth of work and concentration into it.
You can tell by the lyrics that this album takes place in the Year Zero universe as well, for better or worse. I doubt this is the "Year Zero 2" he was talking about making as a follow up to YZ though, so we'll see if that ever comes into fruitation or if this is panned off as the follow up.
Releasing it for free was a really savy move too IMO. I think we'll see in the coming years as more and more musicians take the independent route, album sales will take the backseat in importance to public awareness. Touring and merchandise sales (or diversifying into different, multiple artistic mediums) will become the name of the game, and keeping your name and your music in peoples minds is how these guys will stay afloat.
