For a quick second I thought this was about the gay band Pansy Division that Kirk Hammett helped bring some noteriety to. Thankfully, that ain't the case.

whats with all the interest in Joy Division recently?
that movie Control about Ian Curtis came out earlier this year
I think with the whole 80s revival in music where everybody and their mother is ripping 80s sounds in music today, someone or some people wanted to venture into one of the roots of music from that time '79-'83.
I think it was a matter of time someone did a Joy Division doc considering how influential they are/were. If you name any band of alternative rock then ('90s) and now, every single one will say they're influenced by them.
The 'Control' movie probably opened the doors for this documentary maker and/or it was the kickstart that got this doc maker some money backing.
Anyway, JOY DIVISION RULES. My personal #1 always and forever.
Saw the doc in Jan at a screening up here in SF & I liked it better than Control.
Didn't concentrate so much on Ian early on, pretty much plays as a chronological story of the band going into nuts & bolts type stuff like the artwork of "Unknown Pleasures" & how that album was recorded, with some funny anecdotes thrown in. Band from broken city does good, film at 11.
Then once Ian starts to unravel it rewinds in time & goes into more depth with him. The rest of the band was totally unaware of what he was going thru, or just totally unwilling to step in. Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV) seems to have connected with Ian more than any of his bandmates, or so he/she/it claims. Annik is also interviewed quite a lot, but all they got from Deborah was quotes, nothing on camera.
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHRRRGGGG!!! I need to see this one too. Because of freaking school I missed out on Control, but I'm gonna buy the freaking DVD anyway.
Joy Division got popular again methinks because of bands like Interpol, Editors, She Wants Revenge, and any other 80's sounding bands that have singers that have deep voices. All of us old dudes (in real life and the press) have been saying that Interpol sounded like Joy Division since we heard their first note. If you couple that with 24 Hour Party People, and the fact that more and more bands were coming out that in some way SOUNDED like Joy Division...well every time one of these bands gets mentioned in the media, Joy Divison is also mentioned. Eventually people's curiosity gets the best of them and they want to know...Who the hell are Joy Division?
Not to mention New Order were touring and doing a fistfull of JD songs...oh yeah, and Hot Topic sells Joy Division T-shirts. That right there brings the band to a whole new audience whether you want to admit it or not.
