whenever i think back about watching the Wide World of Sports as a kid, i always think of Jim's

That is the first thing that I thought of when I read that he died.

He'll always be, and rightly so, associated with that phrase, but the thing that I remember most was his coverage of the hostage crisis at the Munich Olympic Games.
I don't recall exactly how long he was on the air, but the time was considerable. I'll never forget the singular comment he made when the word came back from the airport that there were no survivors. After relaying the accounts filtering back to the studio, he looked directly into the camera and softly said "They're all gone."
The fatigue and anguish on his face spoke volumes.
RIP Jim. A true pro.
