So I managed to squeeze my way into the star studded premier of "The Incredible Hulk" last night. Nothing like watching a pool full of paparazzi make eye contact with you and come to the instant conclusion of "uhhh . . . nobody." Quite the entertaining spectacle, but the all-you-can-eat and drink pre-party made it all worth it.
First off . . . I was a casual fan of the TV show, and read only a few comics back in the day. I did NOT like the Ang Lee version of the film. I went in with very low expectations.
I left pleasantly surprised. Let me say that, despite having NO familiarity with the Iron Man story at all, I was very impressed with that film, and felt immediately that it was going to be franchise I will own and enjoy from beginning to end. (As long as it's handled correctly, of course.)
The Incredible Hulk most definately went old school, and I thought it parallelled the story that I remember much, much better than before. I think Norton did an acceptable, yet not overwhelming job with the Banner role. His chemistry with Tyler was a little weak, I thought, and I think her's was the weakest character in the movie.
As we all know, this hulk is 100% CGI from beginning to end. I have to say, despite some overdone shots involving night and water, some of the CGI was extremely seemless and very well done. Don't get me wrong, I knew it was there, but it wasn't distracting enough to take me out of the story. There are three major acts (you can pretty much assume what an "act" means), and some of the story in between is decent, some not-so-much. Tim Blake Nelson was solid in his role, although it takes a while to get into it. I do find the selection of Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky an odd choice. Not that he's horrible, but he's Mr. Orange and "Pumpkin" from Pulp Fiction for christ's sake!
Some cool cameos from Stan Lee, Lou Ferrigno (who must have signed a thousand autographs before and after the screening) and as the Universal trailers have already spoiled - Mr Tony Stark.
I wasn't blown away by the Hulk, but I was more entertained than I expected, and I don't *think* it was the beer that pushed me in that direction.
By the way . . . if you like bass in your movies, there are a couple of scenes in this movie that will knock your socks off.
EDIT - Also, although they are certainly going to have their work cut out for them, namely trying to get competing movie studios to share more than they ever before, Marvel is doing a good job of building these franchises as such that they should be able to interweave these characters together relatively seamlessly, truely creating the Marvel Universe like never before.

he's the only reason why I'm seeing this movie, haha.
We were seated a good 20 minutes prior to the movie. It was in the Gibson Amphitheatre and it was packed, so there were a ****load of people. I did not see Norton or Tyler at all, but I did see many of the other character actors, who were more than gracious to sign autographs for many of the kids that were there - which is always cool.

oh, thats cool that they did it at Gibson. makes sense, I guess.
I wish I could have gone, haha. I'm excited for the movie though.

Thanks...despite my overwhelming reluctance to see this...I am slowly being won over. And total comic-Hulk-geeks out there(that's you boy1der)...
fairly large spoiler alert!!!!!
Tim Blake Nelseon is being set up as ...THE LEADER!!!! Awesome geek-tastic choice!!!!!
Still wish they had gone retro with the Abomination design, he was one of my alltime fave "villains" back in the day...And Sam Elliot's mustache was a better Thunderbolt Ross...but these are minor quibbles

Didn't we just have a mainstream Hulk movie a few years ago with Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly? Is this a continuation or a completely different project?
I know there have been more, at least they've been spread out. It seems odd.

New story. New continuity. Pretend that other one never happened.

Actually Doc, from what I have heard they don't ignore the events of the first flick...I think it was on A.I.C.N. where I read a review that this is less a relaunch of the previous movie than a relaunch of the old tv show. Which can't be a bad thing.

Well... this movie takes place within the same continuity as the Iron Man movie and the rumored Captain America, Thor, Ant Man and Avengers movies...
I think this movie is something like Superman Returns.
It takes place "in media res" and you're expected to know the general pace of the story... but I don't think it's a sequel in the strictest sense of the word.
I don't think Edward Norton's Banner will have memories of fighting his dad in a giant cloud.

indeed...they take the finer points of the Ang Lee flick and discard the rest...but to ignore it entirely would be disingenuious. Not a sequel...not a re-start...more of an apology. Hate to bitch, but a more traditional Abomination woulda been greatly appreciated!

Interesting that Louis Leterrier has already gone on record that the addition 70 minutes of footage that caused all the controversy with Norton will at least be available on the Blu-ray. A lttle extra story would work - but over an hour extra? That would have been overkill.
