So your all buying a hi-def movie that was filmed on Hi-8 ?
The majority of Cloverfield was shot with 4 HD cameras.
Thompson Viper
Sony CineAlta F23
Panasonic HVX-200
Panasonic AG-HSC1U
Used here
The last one is technically a consumer camera, but still shoots 1080i.
In saying that, the filmmakers "dumbed down" the very polished look of the source material to make it look like it was shot with the typical 1-chip miniDV camera. There were some shots that used the analog 1-chip cameras, but they were used sparingly.

Good to know, I had heard nothing but bad things from my coworkers so I never saw it, but it sounds like I should give it a shot. Going on my queue right now.

Your co-workers sound like they kind of suck! Stop listening to them. Cloverfield is really well done. I've seen it three times now and it gets better each viewing.

Wow, just saw it, thought the film was OK, but the compositing (and VFX) was truly astounding! The amount of match moving that is going on is phenomenal, and done so well. Mad props on that account.
