Should probably be titled "scariest movies made by white people". ****in' lame, but scary
The Shining The Exorcist
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Silence of the Lambs
Jaws
The Ring
Halloween
Psycho
Se7en
Rosemary’s Baby
Poltergeist
28 Days Later Nightmare on Elm Street
The Thing
Evil Dead
Carrie
Night of the Living Dead
The Omen
An American Werewolf in London
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
I don't know about you, but the there are only a handful of titles on that list I would consider scary. Nearly all of them are good to great thrillers, but not scary (horror) movies. It's kind of annoying that just because a movie is categorized as a "horror" movie, it's supposed to be scary. The horror genre has had a serious umbrella issue the past 15-20 years. (How the hell does An American Werewolf in London get the nod before The Howling? The Howling has some truly scary moments in it. Werewolf had Landis' obvious "comedy-before-all" fingerprints all over it, with nary a scary moment in it.)
But just so I don't get any negative karma, I DO like all of the movies on the list, on some level. I just don't think all of them belong on anyone's "scariest movies" list.
Forgetting about the color of skin of it's director, I'll put my list together soon and post it. (Though "scary" is subjective, I'll post it anyway. )

I guess most of those movies would be considered "scary" by most which is fine by me, but when I'm looking for horror, I'm looking for GORE, not scares. None of those movies really have any gore other than maybe Evil Dead. Anyways, from that list, I'm a big fan of Evil Dead and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

I think that's what a lot of people kind of overlook, the context of when these movies came out. Look at Jaws, people watch it today and it isn't all that scary, but when it came out, it literally made people terrified to go into the water. These days, Shark Week is scarier than Jaws, but there are still very few movies that scared more people than Jaws when it first came out.

in all honesty, i would say that Jaws is probably the scariest movie of all time. nobody wanted to go into the ocean and many STILL won't... and those that do, many will with a least some thought lingering in the back of their head.

Totally agree. I think the fact it was about something that could actually happen to anyone, and actually DOES happen, and not about ghosts or monsters makes it all that more scary. I still remember having to do a pier swim when I was in Jr. Guards all by myself and it was a cold rainy day. Damned if the Jaws theme didn't start playing in my head as I was rounding the end of Huntington pier back when it was all closed after being wrecked from the storms. And I like sharks!

Coming from a younger view point, Alien is STILL freaky as s***, not to mention a perfectly paced movie. Every scene and location was perfectly realized visually too. It's one of my favorite movies.
And to the Ring/Ringu argument; This may be blasphemous, but am I the only one who thought Ringu was pretty cheesy and not scary at all? There were annoying/dumb parts to the remake, but for whatever reason it sufficiently scared the crap out of me when it first came out.
