Default What to do with Ignorance

Dear LGKers,

A little while back I got the email about Obama that was nothing more than liable (the written form of slander), going on and on about things that should be irrelevant in an educated person's mind. The email focuses solely on the fact that the man is black, that his mother was an athiest, that he went to an Islamic school before he could choose where he went (not saying it's good or bad, just a fact), and that his name sounds like that of some people we don't like.

This email was sent by the woman who sits next to me in my office, and when I realized she was seriously upset by this whole thing (she was convinced, by this one viral email, that Obama would hand the country over to Osama because their names rhyme, no hyperbole), even after I quoted the last sentence of Article IV of the Constitution (paraphrased: There will be no test/question of religion to hold any public office). BTW, she said she didn't "care about that" whole Consitution thing, the email was real.

My question to all of you: is there anything anyone's found that is affective vs. complete ignorance and (let's be honest) stupidity? My HR Manager said the company frowns against beating people with sacks of doorknobs until they understand things.

Adding another question: Does everyone meet people like this, or is it just me? I almost hope I have bad luck, and it's just me, because the fewer people in the world there are like this the better

You should ask her how many of the Nigerian email scams she has fallen for and then sign her up in a few pyramid scams.

Wow.

Back in '04 I had a boss who was always railing against democrats. This person regurgitated ALL the Wacky Right Wing talking points from La La Land. This was a boss and I was new to the job, so I didn't ever really respond other than rolling my eyes. He'd always be like "Osama Bin Laden supports John Kerry, do you?" Crazy ****. I always half hoped he didn't really believe his own crazy ****... like nobody could be that ignorant, but now I'm pretty sure he did believe every word of it. Sounds like he could be married to that chick you sit next too. Talk about the Ultimate ignorant couple.

Sad. These people are really out there.

There area always going to be people out there who believe this sort of stuff. First of all, most of the "facts" that are in that email are out and out lies. Let the lady know that he has been a Christian all of his life and that he goes to church every sunday. It's really a shame that people won't do their research. Whether it's on positions of the candidate they're voting for, or the actual backgrounds of ones they won't, you'll find that all the time. The only thing you CAN do, is correct the false statements and hope your words make their mark.

I don't remember off hand if I've had to deal with anyone who believes this kind of non-sense but I'm pretty sure it's out there. BTW, if one is an "adult" it is very hard to educate them at this point. When it comes to politics or religion, forget it.

I find it sad that it matters that Obama (or anyone else) has to be a Christian to be President. I wouldn't care if he was a member of the "Hare Club for Men" as long as he could be a good Pres.

However, the issue over one's religion is, at least, a more legit one that this stupidity about his name (or middle name as it turns out). Frankly, I think his background in Islam (no matter how small) is probably a positive when it comes to possible future diplomacy with others around the world as Pres.

As to the Constitution thing: You'll be surprised how many people will wave the flag and say how great our country is but ignore true Constitutionally based facts when it comes down to it. Many issues Ron Paul brought out during this campaign showed this in spades.

"I think Obama's actions should speak louder than his words.

Would a Christian lay his hand on the bible or the koran?

would a real american by heart refuse to pledge allegiance to our flag and our country?

His actions tell me he is not for America and is not a christian.

A vote for obama is a vote for islam is a vote against the United States. "

I generally agree, but for what it's worth, my understanding is that he became a Christian in his 20s when his social activism took him to a lot of black churches. One could argue that he was already on his political journey and thus his conversion might not be a sudden intellectual epiphany. Even so, how many politicians only go to church to further their careers, and why should it matter?

I think instead of emailing suggestions that he might be secretly Muslim, it might be more effective to email his positions on the issues and his voting record in the Senate. I don't see how many conservative or conservative-leaning moderates would vote for him once they see past the inspirational rhetoric.

don't know anyone like that, but don't doubt they exist.

I don't wish to "liable" here.

But, I find using words properly to be "affective" deterrent against appearing ignorant.

But seriously, Refuse to discuss politics at work and your life will be much less complicated. If you have a career it will be much better for it.

But if the issue is one that presents itself to you in your personal life with somene who is close to you. I find that sitting them down and explaining that people use politics as mirrors of themselves to reflect their fears and bias in a more socially accepted manner. With patience and a depth of understanding of the real issues that is driving their statements it is possible to get them to at least open up their view of the world and accept a wider range of viewpoints without seeing them as evil.

If that doesn't work I just remind them that the jews control everything and none of this s**t matters anyways.

Do you live in California?

If so, Obama will be winning the state and its electoral college votes anyway. So it really doesn't matter how she feels about him.

Sadly, you are not the only one to have to deal with this level of ignorance. I received the same e-mail, forwarded by a co-worker who was horrified at the "facts" about Obama. I have found that it's usually a waste of time trying to educate people about matters pertaining to politics/religion. Unfortunately, this country is full of lazy idiots (do I sound too cynical/bitter?)

I agree that this email is scaremongering, and not the sort of thing to you like to see. But the facts you listed from the email are all true. It cannot, by definition, be libel.

I have read stuff from my conservative friends about Clinton that is offesnive and untrue. Likewise I have been forwarded stuff from my liberal blogger friends about Bush that are equally offensive and untrue. It's unfortunate that people on both sides of the political spectrum can stoop to the lowest level of decency in the political debate. But Obama is a politician like the other candidates. He's no more or less deserving of these kind of attacks. If he is to be president he better have a thick skin.
