The only people that seem to care about this are nutjobs. I don't give a crap if someone says "Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas/L'chaim/Allahu Akbar/ or Happy Kwanza". And real Christians shouldn't either, given spirit in which such salutations are given.
That said...
Merry Christmas! Peace on earth and good will towards men.
As an atheist, and a fan of history, I know that the war on Yule was won by the Christians, and that is why we have "Christmas". If a Jesus existed, he probably wasn't born on December 25, even though lots of other heroes from myth were. That's why I like to say, "Merry Christmas (observed)".
It doesn't matter. Big deal. We celebrate a holiday that is currently based on a highly improbable mythical non-person. That is how it goes, today. Merry Christmas, Happy Yule, a Pleasant Winter solstice to you, or Happy Holidays. It doesn't matter. Either way, it's a holiday that has been celebrated for centuries, and that is why we decorate trees, and burn logs in the fire place, eat ham and give gifts. It's all mixed together, combining many mythical religious and cultural traditions. It isn't a sacred Christian holiday as John Gibson, and anyone else would like you to believe. It is a holiday that us humans celebrate, and would be celebrating had there been a Christianity, or not. Here, read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianization
As to the article, I like this agenda that O'Reilly is spouting. If we secularist were to rid the world of Christmas, "legalization of narcotics, euthanasia, abortion at will, and gay marriage" would all happen! Just like that! Amazing!! Let's get the ball rolling! Or, maybe it's simply business, and to sell crap to the most people, you do things that won't offend them? Hmmm...
Growing up . . . Christmas to me was about Santa Claus. That's it. Yeah, there was that "other" story about Baby Jesus, etc. etc. But Christmas was about Santa, and Easter was about that damn Bunny.
In fact, I remember every year my sister and I would take my parents Time Life Christmas LP set, and we'd edit a new tape that we could listen to on Christmas morning. Santa songs? IN! Songs that mention Jesus? OUT! Weather and other non-descript songs (Let it Snow, Silver Bells, White Christmas, etc.) were acceptable.

i don't think i've ever given it that much thought... i've always taken more pleasure seeing all my loved ones happy.

That's what is was for me too. I didn't care what the meaning of the word Christmas meant or anything. All I knew was that I'd been good, and Santa was going to bring me some goodies!
It's Hockey Season at my house. There are only two seasons: Hockey Season and Fishing Season.
