I do think this is a dangerous precedent. Imagine if the only requirement for independence is an ethnic majority despite the fact that the territory has been historically part of another country for hundreds of years. Does this mean that Imperial Vally could decide to cede to Mexico some day because it is 75% Hispanic? Sure....is it likely, no. But it does set the world up for some interesting conflicts down the road.
Palestine, Kurdistan, North Ossetia....what becomes of this place. Will the US have to recognize them as well or can we pull a double standard? I don't like this move of recognizing unilateral independence...I think there will be some dire consequences someday....

Kosovo has been worn torn for centuries. Kosovo was it's own country for years it was exchanged back and forth by the Ottomans, Serbs, Austria Hungary, etc
It was an automonous country for a few years after WW1 then merged into yugoslavia.
Don't forget that Kosovo was also a site of ethic cleansing back in the 90's. Albania and Serbia would eventually probably go to war over the area anyway and it makes much more sense to grant Kosovo independence again.
The Balkans were a powder keg before and after Soviet rule. Changing the dynamics of that region will likely only help in the long run

The ethnic cleansing was tragic and certainly regrettable but I do not think that should give them carte blanche to declare independence. Furthermore, in the last 8 years, most violence in Kosovo has been perpetrated against the Serbian minority.
Kosovo declaring independence unilaterally is a short term solution that will result in long term problems.

I predict short term problems long term solution. But only time will tell.
I forgot....which President sent troops into Yugoslavia
gee, Europe may not like us...for recognizing someone's independence.
aren't these guys more legitimate than Israel? Remember, it's our will that nation builds these days(actually since the monroe doctrine, but that would require learning history.)
good Lord...if this happens again screw the tear gas and start picking them off one by one with live rounds
The last time an embassy guard fired a shot in anger was when??
It certainly wasn't in Tehran in 1979!

See - this is where the problem is imo. It's great for western countries to practice democracy and observe the experiment from far away. But take a look at the current situation in Balkans:
- Macedonia (with recent clash with its Albanian citizens/separatists)
- Monte Negro (substantial Albanian minority in smaller parts of the country)
- Bosnia & Herzegovina (3 entities barely kept together so far)
- Serbia (regardless of recent economic rise, it's still a crime controlled country)
Region just had 10 years of relative peace and quiet which is probably water under the bridge now. If nothing else the tensions are now back where they were in in the 90's.

I'm taking this as my next cue - when we gained our independence ion 06/25/91, the same EU (Slovenia currently presiding) which is one of the driving forces behind Kosovo now, enforced a three month moratorium on effectiveness of our decision and it took 10 months for US to recognize us as independent country. Germany for an example - 12/19/91, effective 01/15/92. Sure we were angry, disappointed and demoralized, but that was probably the correct approach, make sure the new guys deserve it, check on facts, calculate your interests, THEN recognize or not.
Serbs definitely will not let this go easily, whoever thinks that riots will die away and that extreme element in Serbia will simply let go of Kosovo is wrong. Kosovo was such mantra in recent years in Serbia (even more than in 80's and early 90's), I wouldn't be surprised if this escalates into something bigger.
On the other hand, would Albanian majority in Kosovo support anything else but full independence? Definitely not, this train is probably already in Dreamaboutitville so what do we do? It is not like they don't have a country of their own, but they sure had suffer through 20 or so years of apartheid.
