Glad to see there is a non-partisan group that is trying to increase awareness of the biggest threat to our national security. The thing I like about these guys is that they don't buy into the "green-only" schemes that so many other similar groups do, but instead look at several simple and viable ways to decrease our dependence upon foreign oil first and all oil eventually.

IMO, this is exactly what the country needs to do.

Decrease Demand: increase vehicle fuel economy, promote hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

Develope Alternatives: Biofuel-blends, hydrogen, plug-in hybrids.

Increase Domestic Supply:
Drill domestically, tap unconventional sources (oil shale, etc), and develope and deploy enhanced oil recovery techniques (like C02 flooding) to recover more oil from existing wells.

Thanks for the link. Surprised that there was no mention of nuclear power, but I only had time to skim the report.

Well, I think that they're particular interest is to steer the country towards energy independence when thinking of petroleum. Power plants probably don't fall into their realm of concern, since the number of petroleum-fueled power plants are few and far between (if they exist at all).

I do agree, though, that nuclear is the way we need to head for our future power-generation needs.

Every time I drive to Vegas or Phoenix I think of how nice it would be to be riding in a high speed electric train.

The isotopes needed for nuclear power are typically harder to mine and are more scarce in general in North America. So a dependence on nuclear power would make the US more beholden to countries in Central Asia, Russia and China.

Hmm...interesting. Hadn't heard that. Got a link or a source that I could use to read up on that?

Alright. After reading that article, I'm led to believe that the reason the majority of our nuclear fuel currently comes from foreign sources is because nuclear fuel is not mined to such an extent here as it is in foreign countries.

That's easy enough to fix. Invest in the infrastructure. It might be a bit before we catch up to capacity, but that article doesn't say it can't be done. Really, it sounds as if it might be a more readily fixable problem than the one we currently have with petroleum.
