Cameras Catch Truckers Without Seat Belts - Good Day Oregon News Story - KPTV Portland
Peek-a-boo, I see you driving without a
My question is-aren't truckers not wearing seat belts pretty low on the list of things Police should be actively trying to stop? For a "for your own good" type law isnt this a bit over zealous on enforcement? If the ticket cost 100 bucks-what did the High Tech Camera cost along with the man power it takes to operate the camera and conduct the operation?

While I agree with it not maybe being a top priority, the fact that it's probably the ONLY way one can actively monitor the fact makes it understandable. Can YOU tell on the freeway if a trucker is wearing his seatbelt or not?
Repeal the laws if that's your problem, but as long as it's the law, there has to be a way to enforce it.
I'm more interested in what else the camera are going to see, because sometimes those truckers can be pretty crazy.
I used to be for the helmet law and the seatbelt law. I have since changed my stance on these issues. I am dumbfounded on why one would not wear a seatbelt or helmet. My brother was involved in an accident many years ago and he would have been killed if he was not wearing his seatbelt. If they want to enforce laws using cameras they should enforce the child seat laws first.

Well, we have red liht cameras. What about those. How about this. I was in Brea a few weekends back and parked in the parking structure behind the movie theatre. My tags were expired ( I know, my fault). They had a meter maid driving around the parking structures trying o give out tickets for anything and everything. Brea must be hard for cash to go to this level. Pissed me off.

Again, I think this is more of a factor of limited ability to enforce. I don't think seeing children in or out of seats is very difficult given the chance. Granted, I think you're right that it's a far more important (and dangerous) issue that truckers in "tanks" barrelling down the road. How many times do we see truckers with hardly any damage to their rigs walking away from an accident where you can' even recognize the make and model of the car they're involved with?

Agreed. Its easier going after regular citizens and getting money from them then it is actually going after criminals.

Wait, you mean they have actually stooped to having parking enforcement officers write *parking* tickets?
This country is going to hell in a handbasket.
You really need to write your congressman. This is an outrage.

First off - this doesn't prevent ANY police officer from doing the job they were already doing.
Secondly, if a criminal is someone who breaks the law, then they ARE going after the criminals.
If you don't like it change, the law. Make sure to include red lights in that appeal, too. I hate those things flashing all the time.
Do you feel the same way then about Illegal Aliens? Dont they break the law simply by being in the country illegally?
And I think it does prevent officers from doing other jobs-how much time and manpower are allocated trying to enforce something that really has no effect at all on Public Safety? If a big rig crashes its going to crash regardless if the driver is wearing a seatbelt or not.
I know the law is the law but also seems like an enormous misuse of time and resources with lots of time and effort with relatively little payoff regarding public safety.

Yes. And just like seatbelts, and speeding - it's something that is going to more often than not be overlooked.

Apparently "Truckers" are not a part of the public. Gotcha.

I understand probably no one you care about happens to be a trucker - props to you. Once again, that gives you the greenlight to ban anything and everything that doesn't affect your world. Thankfully, there are people out there who's parent/spouse/sibling/child does drive trucks. This law is to help save their lives. And generate a little state revenue in the process. If they didn't feel it was prudent, I don't think they would have designed such a system.

Once again, would it be possble to get past the "Me and My Family - F all others" mentality for ONE issue?
Idaho's ticket for no seatbelt...$10 and it can't be the primary offense. See way too many stories of people in car accidents and the occupants weren't wearing belts.
At least not wearing a seatbelt isn't like drunk driving where you're likely to kill someone else as a result of your actions. The person you are going to kill is yourself.
If you're stupid enough to not put on a seatbelt? Fine. Die.
Parents who don't put their kids in car seats are a totally different situation.
