I think the real difference in the reaction is circumstantial. Cosby was receiving an award at a ceremony celebrating Brown v. Board of Education. A lot of people find it inappropriate to make unexpected controversial comments in such situations. And while he was criticized then, many have since acknowledged there is problem and it is not nearly as controversial now.
I kinda disagree. Discussing black fatherhood at a Brown vs Bd of Education ceremony is the exact place it should be mentioned. He was essentially saying "look, you have the opportunity for an education, don't blow it by being an absent father."
(However, I do think it is very inappropriate [and classless] to criticize the President [who's sitting right behind you] during a funeral, but I digress.)
And it's not "controversial" now because Obama said it.
I find it funny that Katrina is even brought up in this thread - ok, I'll add: wasn't the New Orleans mayor/busdriver a black man? (and yes, Bush still hates him, and so does Condi)

Obama also didn't preach about Ebonics and hip-hop music the way Cosby did. I always find it funny when the righties cherry pick these arguments. Bill Cosby said the best way to clean up black neighborhoods wasn't through police but was to invite in the Nation of Islam. Meanwhile, Farrakhan, the leader of the denomination, has been taking a beating by some of the same people who brought up Bill Cosby.

Katrina was brought up as an example of liberals getting a "free pass" by your own conservative comrade.
