There is a growing protest against the $700 billion bailout that the Bush administration and the Fed are engineering. The Republicans are saying to the Congress (in the usual Bush fashion) give all the power over the program to the executive branch (Treasury department) and don't attach any Congressional oversight conditions or guarantees for the taxpayers.
Here's a good set of ideas from Robert Reich that would impose the necessary policing on Wall Street banks--who the Treasury currently plans to PAY to administer the program that is supposed to clean up the mess those same banks made in the first place!! Can you imagine the conflicts of interest that that little giveaway/payoff entails??
