Here's a good article on Webb by the legendary political journalist from the "New Yorker" mag Elizabeth Drew. This from the 'New York Review of Books'. It's worth the time it takes to read and it makes clear why Webb on an Obama ticket gives the McCain guys nightmares. Word is Webb isn't really looking to be on the ticket, but who knows. He does get along well with Obama and Obama campaigned with him in Virginia when he won his Senate seat.
