About This Page: This is a discussion on Politics within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. I have followed this on and off for a couple years now. From what I understand it does not work nor will it ever at least with current tech.
US
It doesn't work against Russian missiles, but it would probably have a high probability of taking down anything Iran or N.Korea would build in next couple of decades. It's not 100% reliable, but we are talking about percentages here. If Iran ever fires 10 missilies towards USA and there are 30 interception missiles fired, there could be millions of lifes saved, if they hit most of them.

If it doesn't work like yo believe it doesn't then whis Russia so against it? do you think they are against it because it would save us money? Be realistic here Russia knows a whole hell of a lot more than what we have been told in the media about this program. I don't believe the media covered the entire project and there is a hell of a lot more information about this system that the media did not cover. Do you honestly believe the us has only tested this a few times? Yes maybe the publicly known launches failed more than 50% of the time but that doesn't mean they haven't been testing when the media wasn't looking. Seriouls look at Area 51 we know something is going on there and has been covered by the media yet we still don't know what they aretesting there for a fact. Don't think our government is that stupid.
We can park a nuke up someone's ass you better believe we can shoot down a freaking missle. Don't be fooled by the media reports Military and media have never had an open relationship with their technology that has been accurate.

That's a pretty decent piece of sarcastic post. Kind of a "How many retarded things can I write in as few lines as possible" post. Good job, sir!
Heh, that works great, the only problem is, that there would be enough interceptors only for small percentage of Russian missiles. Each missile has multiple warheads and it probably carries dozens of beacons. After it enters the atmosphere from space, it becomes a cruise missile, maneuvering towards the target with a speed of almost 10000 mph, actively trying to avoid interceptors. To intercept such a ICBM with another missile is close to Mission impossible. After USA broke the ABM and started with their shield project, Russia broke the agreement regarding prohibition of orbital weapons, which they actually had deployed as early as in 1962. When a missile is actually orbiting the Earth and can hit the targets from any direction, there is no computer, that could predict its path. If you can't even predict a path of a 10000mph cruise missile, how are you going to hit it?
So this shield works only against countries with much less sophisticated nuclear weapons. Russians are simply objecting the whole idea of what this could bring in the future. Both countries will start developing orbital weapons very soon now, when USA have broken the agreements that were preventing that. Actually both countries are already developing those weapons, let's not be naive. And the new nuclear submarines Russians have built and are building (first new subs since the end of Soviet Union) also suggests they are not quitting the race.
I just hope neither of the countries tests one of these billion bucks worth toys in real action. As long as they are only strategic weapons, they are pretty cool. I'm not really a fan of weapons, but I admire the amazing technological achievements that USA And Russia are showing in the strategic weapons development.
The point is that the Military Industrial Complex made some $$$$.
And with public sentiments at wits end in regard to Iraq, there needs to be something on the horizon to keep the money flowing in. Russia, in all its glory, is the natural fallback enemy.

Don't forget China and their gold medal conspiracy!

If we were more serious about shooting down Iranian missiles we would be talking to Turkey or Greece about this, not Poland. This is just a big taxpayer expense boondoggle.
Quote:
If Iran poses a threat of a missile-launched nuclear attack, then the interceptors should be stationed in Turkey, not in Eastern Europe. The choice of the latter is, of course, causing Russia concern. Russians respond as if convinced that the US is targeting their silos and not those of Iran.
