Not sure who is flip-flopping more in this race. Obama is all over the place too.

The Cuba Embargo

Decriminalizing of Marijuana

You're in the wrong "megathread" for this stuff AB. Find the Obama one that matches this one. And...as USUAL...you post an unsubstantiated list of crap. Where are your sources and what is the nature of the lie you're claiming exists in each case?

Do you really want me to spend an hour with a special writeup on each? I thought you were a well-informed guy in the political realm. Surely you know all of this already. Take off the Dem glasses once in a while. Examine your own candidate. Its getting old seeing a thread about every potentially controversial thing McCain does.

Kate Couric: Senator McCain, Senator Obama says, while the increased number of US troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shiite government going after militias. And says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?
McCain: I don't know how you respond to something that is as-- such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarlane [phonetic] was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that's just a matter of history. Thanks to General Petraeus, our leadership, and the sacrifice of brave young Americans. I mean, to deny that their sacrifice didn't make possible the success of the surge in Iraq, I think, does a great disservice to young men and women who are serving and have sacrificed.
But here is MacFarland in September of 2006, 3 months before the 'surge' strategy was even announced by the Bush administration:
With respect to the violence between the Sunnis and the al Qaeda -- actually, I would disagree with the assessment that the al Qaeda have the upper hand. That was true earlier this year when some of the sheikhs began to step forward and some of the insurgent groups began to fight against al Qaeda. The insurgent groups, the nationalist groups, were pretty well beaten by al Qaeda.
This is a different phenomena that's going on right now. I think that it's not so much the insurgent groups that are fighting al Qaeda, it's the -- well, it used to be the fence-sitters, the tribal leaders, are stepping forward and cooperating with the Iraqi security forces against al Qaeda, and it's had a very different result. I think al Qaeda has been pushed up against the ropes by this, and now they're finding themselves trapped between the coalition and ISF on the one side, and the people on the other.
And McCain's expertise is supposed to be Iraq? This is disgraceful.

Just a quick question, for those that support Obama, do you support him because you believe he will make a good president or because you are picking the lesser of two evils?

That question could just as easily, if not more so, be asked of McCain's "supporters."
This will be the third consecutive election where the public doesn't so much "elect" a president as it votes a candidate off the island.
I'm somewhat guilty of it. I think a McCain presidency will be absolutely disastrous for the country, particularly economically, and his bassackward policies are a more compelling reason to vote for Barack than anything that Obama might realistically have a chance to enact.
I do think Obama will improve the image of the country abroad--an absolute must these days. I also think the economy will improve, and some initial steps might be taken towards Universal Health Care and a saner environmental policy (though I'm not holding my breath for the latter two).

I agree.
The only reason I asked that question is because many supporters of Obama are projecting MAJOR change in this country. Most voters know what to expect from McCain since he is a Bush clone (I'm sorry conservatives, its just the truth). So this has placed me in a difficult bind as a voter.
This reminds me of that South Park episode where they vote to elect either a DOUCHE or TURD SANDWICH for the school mascot.
I have spoken to many conservative friends and they are all debating whether to just avoid voting for McCaine and not have to hear how they were responisble for voting another bad president.

I'll just chime in really quick. Major change will be difficult as long as the corporate lobby is so strong in D.C. Too much money and influence over the direction of our country in Congress is a major reason why change will be difficult if Obama wins. If McCain wins, then we're basically looking at Bush III, minus the fundamentalist Christian wing of the GOP.

I couldn't disagree more. McCain if elected would be the most "liberal" Repub in the White House since maybe ever. I think if he wins, it won't be nearly as bad as the Liberals are fearing it will be. Look at his track record. He is way more moderate than previous Conserv Repubs. He will not be Bush 3. Far from it. If you are only looking at Iraq and the decision to not pull out immediately, I don't see how you can say that. And besides, GOP without the Fundamentalist wing as influential - that sounds pretty good to me.
