Was working last night and didn't see anything live. Was this speech really the embarrassment that most say it was, especially when compared to Obama's?

McCain's a stiff, old, lispy speech giver. This is hardly news.
Regardless, McCain is whispering softly into the ears of Hillary supporters by creating the illusion of distance between himself and the current administration.
This is one that had to be seen to be believed. That creepy forced smile on his face along with his little cackle after the numerous times he said "That's not change we can believe in"... it was awkward, to say the least. Almost felt bad for the guy.

If McCain wants to make this election about the issues then he's going to lose for sure.
Well, that's fine you're entitled to your opinion regarding Obama being better on the issues, but we both know that it's going to be about a lot of other things as well.
I am hoping that we can do better here, but I doubt it.

Yes, you win Leo, if the winner is going to be decided by who is the better orator, then Obama is definitely it.
Now that a non-Obama supporter has conceded this point, maybe the issues can be the focus here. I sincerely doubt it.
My own feeling is that there are different kinds of "oration" and that McCain is pretty good at debate if he can keep from appearing to be sour and mean.
Obama's going the Jackie Robinson route in this campaign. McCain has to adjust to it.
I've posted repeatedly here that I think that the Democrats will win if the campaign is about policy and issues so I certainly hope that is so.
I've also said repeatedly that the Republicans know that so they are going to try to make it about fear, racism, Obama's middle name, 'patriotism', preachers Obama knows, things Obama's wife didn't say, spam slanders, whisper campaigns and push polls, with an "October surprise" at the end. Anything but real policy and issues.
I reiterate my opinion that nothing is more powerful in American politics than negative campaigning based on false but effective 'wedge issues' directed at tiny slivers of voters in swing states. If McCain and the swift boaters play it right he could lose the popular vote like Bush did v. Gore and still win the general election. Racial resentment, religion, manliness, nationalism. For the Republicans any discussion of policy has to be made an opening to raise these emotional topics in code.

This morning I heard Obama use the term "just in the waning years" to describe the current administration's recent focus on Isreal.
I thought to myself how much I enjoy hearing Obama use the English language but then worried those big words are going get him in trouble.

haha, well... a slice of this board probably had to look it up, so I imagine a large portion of our nation is scratching their heads over that "big" word.
