The Clinton campaign, in fact, released a statement insisting that the Associated Press story that fueled this maelstrom was not correct; "Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening," the statement asserted.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are competing factions in the Clinton campaign--the realists who want to concede and the hardliners who want to carry on. That's why you're seeing competing messages being leaked to the press.
I still think a lot of this was planned from the beginning. Keep the Dems at the top of the new cycle during times where things are normally quiet, unite the ticket, and carry the momentum into the Convention and then a general campaign where Hillary can focus on her strong areas, and Obama on his.
Think how many more registered Democrats they have gained because people normally who would have been left out of the process now believed that their vote actually meant something in a primary. Many of these people will re-visit the polls in November.
