The proposed U.S.-Iraqi pact has triggered street protests in Iraq, where many suspect the deal could lead to the establishment of permanent American bases, a long-term presence of U.S. troops and a weakening of Iraqi government control over those troops.
Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, whose militia was the target of a U.S.-backed Iraqi clampdown in Basra and Baghdad recently, has called for weekly protests against the agreement.
Al-Maliki and Ahmadinejad met Sunday afternoon, with Ahmadinejad calling on Iraq's neighbors and the United Nations to help restore security and stability to Iraq, IRNA reported. And al-Maliki thanked Ahmadinejad for his call for an end to longstanding U.N. sanctions against Iraq that date back to the 1991 Persian Gulf war.
Iran has long called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, which the United States invaded in 2003. Meanwhile, the United States has accused Iran of arming and training "criminal" Shiite militias in Iraq and of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, allegations the Iranians deny.
It is al-Maliki's third visit to Iran since he became prime minister more than two years ago. The two countries, which are neighbors, both have Shiite Muslim majorities, and al-Maliki's ruling coalition is dominated by Shiite religious parties long backed by Iran.
Just thought these facts about Iran's relationship with "our guys" in Iraq needed to be pointed out to you "stay 'till we've won" guys ONE MORE TIME.

I've always had the opinion THIS was the major reason for the invasion in the first place. Get the base out of Saudi Arabia and into a more central place like Iraq.

Absolutely right. The plan has always been the "100 years option." But with Iraq guaranteeing to Iran that the US will not be allowed (could they stop us?) to launch attacks against Iran from US bases in Iraq, and with Iran a major sponsor of the parties of the Shiite majority in Iraq (including al-Maliki's at present) what could the purpose of such bases really be?
Certainly, the security of Israel. Certainly a huge and continuing drain on the US treasury that benefits businesses and contractors who are clients and supporters of the GOP. What else?
Anyway, it's funny that we won't talk to Iran without preconditions while the Iraqi Shiites won't make deals with the US that don't sit well with the Iranians. What will the under the table deal be if McCain wins? What if Obama wins?
If any country, except perhaps Israel, played any administration other than the Bush neo-con dominated one like Iran has, there would be charges of treason by the Republicans. How many soldiers ahve died because of this and other "false intelligence" stuff? How does the true believer super-patriot crowd justify turning a blind eye to this stuff?
And now it happens that the Cheney crowd in the White House has decided to reassert themselves and take Iran policy back from the slightly less crazed advisors to Bush.
And more on the negotiations to lock us into Iraq...58 permanent bases and legal independence from Iraqi law plus control of their airspace and so on. Deal planned to be done by late July, but lots of resentment against the plan among the shiite parties.

KJ/Obediah, thought I'd post your news piece from yahoo about the deadlocking of the current negtiations to keep the US in Iraq in perpetuity here because I'm trying to build a continuing record of the process and progress of the negotiations and related events.
