LAW ENFORCEMENT RADIO ADS SHINE LIGHT ON DANGEROUS PENSION PROPOSAL

Los Angeles, August 27, 2007 – The Los Angeles Police Protective League has made a major radio buy to begin running spots that will shed light on the devastating impact that former assemblyman Keith Richman’s state-wide pension proposal would have on police officers, firefighters and teachers.

Richman’s proposal was formally submitted to the California Attorney General and could be placed on the ballot as early as the June 2008 elections. Under the proposal, pensions would be cut by 30 percent to 65 percent for new public employees hired on or after July 1, 2009. As a result, new police officers would have to work longer and would receive a smaller pension than current police officers. The measure is particularly harsh on non-safety employees, requiring them to work until age 65 to receive a drastically-reduced pension. For example, new government employees who work 40 years will retire with a pension of less than half of their working income.

It's already hard enough getting qualified police recruits to put in for the position. This will make the profession even more less attractive and less qualified recruits getting hired.

Hey we are all in this together my public employee friends.

And to the question of 401ks, no, but we can put pretax wage income into 457s. It is not matched by our employers though.

BTW, you forgot the (R) behind Keith Richman's name.

Really? That sucks. LA County has Pension (Contributory, of course), 457 AND 401k, with 4% matching of EACH - 8% total.

You gotta love Republicans undercutting the potential incomes and lifestyles of cops and firefighters, but they'll stand by their CEO tax cuts until they die. They'll never change.

Do you always have to make it a partisan issue? I don't agree with this proposal in the slightest and I think it's absolutely disgusting that public employees pensions would be on the chopping block. However, I'll play your game, and when/if a Democrat is elected to the oval office, and they start down-sizing the military, and making cuts, closing down military installations, I'll make sure you see the huge D next to the names of everyone who voted for it to pass. Then what? One isn't worse than the other, so pick your poison.

It is a partisan issue. Only Republicans back this proposal.

Our empoyer pays the employee share of the CalPers pension. So we are okay here in that regard. You work for LA County?

normally I got your back. this is nothing more than a political announement for your union. did they ask you guys to go "get the word out" why no mention of the propsed measure.. at least show both side if you're going post this as the very least a link to the proposal.

calling a press release an article is a huge stretch

Nah...Keith Richman ((R)- are you happy?) is a prick. He has attempted this at least a couple of times without any success. He is trying to eliminate the 3 @50 in the CALPERS System.

The reason Go makes the point that this fella is a Republican is because republicans generally blame dems for cutting the benefits of our public servants. "Dems are weak on crime/national security/ etc..." Such nonsense.
While hypocrisy isn't exclusive to republicans... they sure are soaking up a lot of it lately with this and all the homosexual/pedophiliac activity.
