I don't see a problem with it. It is a bit high though. I'm sure the large alcohol producers might do some lobbying though.

I could accept an addt'l tax, but .30 a bottle? I'll bet the smokers are laughing their asses off...

"It's a piecemeal approach to the budget that completely avoids any discussion of spending discipline, which is fundamentally why we have the problem that we have."

Uh. . .yeah. Pretty much. Have to laugh though. . .when they were talking about taxing tobacco everyone was on board. Now that it affects something that a much larger majority do, I bet there is more resistance.

Have no problem paying more if I thought the state was going to be responsible with the budget. Problem is we know that even with this sin tax, our state will still have a budget crisis due to the ineptness of our state government.

But the tool still convinced the Franchise Tax Board to bump the tax on alcopops to $2.

I might ***** about the state store for hard liquor, but our prices on beer are pretty much in line with other states.

" Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction."

LOL !!! Good luck "preventing" underage drinking. That is horse**** right there.

"The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said.

Yeah, just screw over the ones that drink responsibly.

Seriously

Prohibition pretty much proved people are going to drink if they want to. Legislator rarely learn what history has taught us.

Tax us into their beliefs, what is next proposing a tax on plastic bags from the grocery stores?

A plastic bags tax would actually be a good thing. In fact, why not just ban them?

Can't do that. We'd have to go back to cutting down trees for them. You don't want that do you Leo? It's the reason we went to plastic ones in the first place.
