That guy is seriously nuts. I hope the evangelical right of this country continues to embarrass themselves in front of the public and quickly dissipates

I just don't understand how people can have such a warped sense of what this country was founded for. Religious freedom and separation of Church and State. That's why people came here.

You want to outlaw immoral acts? Try starting with the basics, oh I don't know, say the 10 Commandments. You think immoral people need to be punished in this life? Outlaw lying and adultry. Or, just admit that basing laws off the Bible isn't the greatest of ideas.

There will be an ongoing debate about why people came here and how much the founding fathers truly wanted separation of church and state. One person is going to post that separation of church and state is not mentioned in the constitution while someone else is going to pull up our treaty with Tripoli mentioning that the US Government is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion...so let's spare everyone from having that debate here a 110th time.

If you look back across our nations history. The number one reason why people have come here is upward social and economic mobility(This of course does not include those who were sold to slave traders by rival tribes or the other slaves that got here by other means)

It's been proven time and again that morality can't be legislated. The best way to shut up the very vocal minority is for everyone to get off their asses and actually vote(plus do away with the electoral college)

The last line of Article 6 of the Constitution, though not a direct quote saying "separate Church and State," gives you a clear idea of how the Founding Fathers felt.

As for the #1 reason people have come to this counrty, I'd agree with you that over the history of this country, those are the meain reason. I'd still consider it very debatable when it comes to the reasons the original settlers came. But like you said, no point in debating that.

Anyway, yeah, guy's an idiot.

And I always vote.

The original settlers came to get away from religious persecution in England. Citizens were expected to switch religions based on whatever the ruling family believed.

You are both wrong

Quote:
Jamestown, located on Jamestown Island in the Virginia Colony, was founded on May 13, 1607.[1] It is commonly regarded as the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States, following several earlier failed attempts. It was founded by the Virginia Company, headquartered in London. It became the capital of the Colony for 83 years, from 1616 until 1699, when it was relocated to Williamsburg, about 8 miles (13 km) distant.

Quote:
In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, the Virginia Company, to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. By December, 104 settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, find gold and a water route to the Orient.
Notice it was mentioned that Jamestown was the first orginal English settlement. The Spanish settled here before the English..Remember Jamestown in 1606

Quote:
One of their first attempts at settlement on the east coast of North America was in 1526, when Lucas Vazquez de Ayllón founded the colony of San Miguel de Gualdape. It could have been in South Carolina or Georgia around the 33 degree of latitude1, but some2 have confused this 1526 settlement with the 1570 attempt by the Spanish to start a settlement in the Chesapeake Bay.
In 1561, Pedro de Menendez de Aviles sailed into the Bahia de Santa Maria. He convinced (or seized) the son of a chief to travel to Spain.3 Paquiquino, the 17-year old son of the werowance at "Ajacan," and a companion from the Chiskiak town on the York River, were the the first Virginians to visit the Old World. They were exhibited to the Spanish royal family and society "at court" in Spain. This allowed Menendez to impress people (including potential financial backers and political supporters) at home, and to expose the Native Americans to the grandeur of European culture. It also showed other Europeans that Spain continued its leadership position in exploring and discovering riches in the New World
NOTE: Saint Augustine, Florida, settled in 1565, rightly claims to be the oldest continuous European settlement in North America. In 1598, Spanish explorers settled in the Tewa town of Ohkay Owingeh, renaming it San Juan de los Caballeros. The Spanish established the first capital of New Mexico nine years before Jamestown. They moved along the Rio Grande to another town (Yunque), then finally settled at Sante Fe in 1610. In the winter of 1610-11, the English almost abandoned their colonial settlement in Virginia
Despite what you were told in school the pilgrims were NOT the first settlers of this country and before someone tries to say the Pilgrims landed earlier, they landed in 1620

So much for not debating over this...

In the interest of sticking to what I said we won't debate this. I will only say the Spanish settlers are irrelevant because they are not the ones who established the United States of America.

You're the only one to mention the pilgrims, so I don't see how that's any kind of argument against anything that was said, though it is an accurate statement.

Also, the sky is blue.

I don't feel like looking stuff up right now, so I'll use what you said as an argument. There are varying ways to look at it, thus everyone can make their own decision.
