About This Page: This is a discussion on Politics within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan and the US responsible for 91% of the executions in the world last year. Kind of makes your chest swell with pride.
I'm sure everyone
As far as I can tell, the only people in the US who are not subject to the death penalty are employees of Blackwater.

Not relevant. Granted, our nation grants due process and generally fair trials where others do not. BUT, granting due process to an innocent person and still mistakenly executing them does not make that death sentence appropriate.
I support the death penalty, I think its a sad but necessary aspect of our justice system. However, there must be a moratorium on all executions until the entire structure of its implementation is rebuilt to ensure fair and accurate sentences.
The BAR association has reccomended such a moratorium and Kenneth Star defends death penalty cases pro bono because it is not implemented fairly in our judicial system right now, nor has it been implemented fairly for likely the past 50 years.
It's obvious to me that the Death Penalty "works". I mean, look at how many people it "scares" into turning the other cheek, and "not" committing horrendous crimes. Face it, the only people the death penalty works on, are good, law abiding citizens like you and me.
Its easy to play a violin when the issue never affects you. But then again, our justice system is infallible and never needs to be adjusted for any reason whatsoever eh?

Something isn't right.
Death isn't rehab, or a deterent. It's a punishment.
I was way off 42 this year, all who deserved to die.
The latest was on Sept 25th. Michael Wayne Richard brutally raped and killed a nurse just after getting paroled from prison on theft and forgery.
Why should taxpayers continue to bear the cost of housing this animal?
I think the point they are making is..
What is an acceptable ratio of accidental executions of innocent people to executions of the evil?
I mean, If we kill say... 100 rapists/murderer/child molesters... does that give us a pass on 10 innocent people? or is it more of a 100-1 ratio?
Edit: Actually Leo and others are likely staunchly opposed to the Death penalty. And for the time being I have to be as well. I'll take the lawyers side and hope for a revamping of its implementation.

Are you kidding ??? This issue affects me everyday. One of my brother officers was brutally murdered (4 years ago to the day) by a gang member. There is overwhelming evidence he did this murder. If he is found guilty and the jury says he deserves to die, then he should die.
And MD420, dont put words in my mouth saying our justice system is perfect. Its far from it..to often people are getting off on cases where they should be spending time in prison. This is a travesty and happens daily.

It sure is a deterrent. Just last week I was about to pop a cap in a fool, but I stopped and thought of Tookie. Homicide averted.

Is it really any surprise to see the right wing fanatics in this thread in bed with Syria, Iran, Pakistan, China, and Sudan on this issue? They're ideological cousins.
Human rights takes a back seat to bloodlust, particularly, in this country, if we're talking about poor people with dark skin.
And it always amuses to me to see these alleged "small government" conservatives enthusiastically endorsing the right of the state to execute its own citizens.
PS: We have more violent crime in this country than the countries without the death penalty. But I wouldn't expect you to let facts influence your ideology. Why would you start now?

Bingo. I find it ironic that some of the spokespersons for murder that have chimed in here are willing to trust the government when it comes to killing people but not when it comes to healthcare.

Not a supporter of the death penalty because it isn't consistently applied.
When I see a rich guy executed for a pre-meditated murder, then maybe.
In the meantime, I see no reason that people convicted of murder shouldn't be spending their time at hard labor. Give them a sledge hammer, point at some boulders and tell them to make those into gravel.
