abandoning ship or a dissident being escorted to the door?
He would have been a great Republican anti-iraq war candidate. The only one is Ron Paul and he's a bit too radical for some. He's a good senator and it's a shame he's retiring. Rumour was he and Bloomberg were going to run independent. That would be good.

Hagel doesn't relish the prospect of being in the minority party in the Senate for the rest of his political career and he wants payback against Bush and his fellow Repubs for ignoring the moral and policy lessons of Vietnam.
If former Senator Bob Kerrey runs for Hagel's seat the Dems will get back the seat. If former governors Mark Warner and Jean Shaheen run in Virginia and New Hampshire they'll likely win the seats of John Warner and Sununu giving the Dems solid control of the Senate. Then Joe 'Sack of ****' Lieberman can switch to the Republicans.

I remember when Jim Jeffords was a guy who was just going with what he felt was right and not a "Sack of ****".
You can still be a Sack of **** even if you're doing what you feel is right. Liebermann is after all the Senator from Israel, so I think he feels he is doing what is right for his constituency.

If were going to call a spade a spade here, one would have to say that Bush is the most pro-Israel national politician and that Lieberman is no more pro-Israel than half of the Republican party. On a side note, it will be my pleasure to see that old gas bag Hagel retire.
