Was listening to talk radio yesterday when they mentioned this....what caught my attention was they spoke about how Tim Liewicke and AEG is raising funds to support this measure. Why you ask? Because LA is going to give a huge tax break to AEG.
OK, wait...why would AEG support a tax just to get a write-off of it? That makes no sense. Wouldn't simply NOT having to pay the tax in the first place be better?

Its a bait and switch-AEG is going to get a tax break provided they can get the Cell Phone tax initiative passed. So AEG is going to do everything they can to take their taxes shifted to the Cell Phone Tax thats not even legal in the first place.

I smell a Walden Media movie about the benefits of cell phone taxes set in some magical family-friendly place.

I want to note that Villaraigosa failed the bar four times. Just sayin'.
No, the BAR failed him.

OK, so I can assume then the write-off is applied to something OTHER than the actual cell phone tax. I would assume this write-off, to whatever it applies to is MORE than what AEG is putting into this particular campaign...otherwise why bother?
So the bottom line is that the Mayor needs money to pass a questionable tax, he gets AEG to front some cost and then gives it back to them using public money. Got it.

Are they trying to pass this by saying they are going to lower the phone tax, but what really is happening is they are lowering the phone tax but increasing a tax elsewhere. The net effect is an overall increase in taxes. What is next, is the Govt going to increase or do away with capital gains tax?

Certainly possible. California doesn't have one and neither do Corporations at the Fed level. The Feds are also considering dumping that 2-year live-in Cap Gains tax relief on home sales (you know..the $250K /$500k one).
With the debt as it is today (thanks to Bush and Congress the last 7 years) look for pressure for tax increases especially if Dems get in the White House.
The thing about the tax itself is that its against the law and going to be ruled unconstitutional. So by pushing this initiative what they're doing is basically legalizing an illegal tax under the guise of lowering taxes.

I understand the guise part but what I don't get is how this help pass a law that was already struck down as unconstitutional.
Oh...wait....they did that with the income tax in 1913...sorry...never mind.
