Default CA Proposition 8 & Phone Polling

I just got a phone call from a polling agent who wanted to know if I was for or against CA Proposition 8, which is an initiative measure which would amend the California Constitution with a new section that would read "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Anyone else getting calls from pollsters about anything? I just wonder why they called me... I'm a registered Democrat and my number isn't even listed.

I've been contacted by mail, on the land-line phone and by a door-to-door canvasser in my neighborhood. These intolerant jerks are a pain in the butt.

I was called recently. These were not pollsters..these are "push-pollers". A push poll is a a type of propaganda delivered under the guise of a poll.

At first, the young lady asked me about prop 8 and how I would vote...I asked her what it was about (mind you I live in AZ with a 951 area code) and she explained it was to amend the constitution on marriage. I told her I would vote no on such a measure. She then told me that they will start teaching homosexuality to kids in school...even told me about a teacher who was reading a story to kids about two "princes". Anyhow...this was "suppose" to sway me I guess. This was the propaganda I can only assume.

After her little propaganda push, I decided to start asking some tough questions...she hung up on me. I called the number back...twice...then an older gentlemen answered...asked how he could help. I explained to him what he was doing and he said they were volunteers for a church, were given a list of registered voters/numbers, and were calling from their home.

I began to question these tactics and the discriminatory nature of such a proposition. He entertained awhile, called himself a "racist" out of frustration with my questions, and hung up.

It was fun. Your experience may vary.

I have still never found anyone, online or in person, who has come up with a valid reason to ban gay marriage.

While I respect your right to have your opinion, I don't consider using the law to force your religious beliefs on others to be a valid reason.

But can anyone offer anything else?

I got a knock on my door yesterday morning, but I didn't answer. Later in the day, I had a vote no on 8 flyer on my door. I am not necessarily for or against gay marriage. I don't think it is my business.

If I may offer this:
Consider this question from the standpoint of society as a whole, with an emphasis on raising children. Which is better, for children to be raised by a mother and a father, or to be raised by two parents of the same gender? For the former, there's over 5000 years of precedent. For the latter, there is virtually no precedent. If you had a choice between two marriage arrangements for raising children, which one would you chose?

What exactly does this post have to do with gay marriage again?

Similarly, there was no precedent for a nation of the people, governed by the people, and for the people. I say monarchy and tyranny are the way to go since that was what we had for 5000 years.

Besides which, I'm not sure your assertion is correct. The spartans took male children and raised them in an all male environment... and they was some tough sons 'a bitches.

And more importantly, I think that there are enough unwanted children who suffer through foster homes... perhaps a loving home would be better for them regardless of who raises them?

As I said before...say no to bigotry in CA.

Here's a scenario for you.

Let's say that gay marriage is legalized in California and supported by the State Constitution.

A certain gay couple decides that they want to get married in a particular church.

That church does not support gay marriage, and thus refuses to perform the ceremony.

The couple sues the church for discrimination.

As a part of the settlement, the church is required to perform the ceremony.

The state is now governing what practices churches must follow.

Is this separation of church and state?

Learn the law man. The situation you describe could not occur because churches are private and not federal or state institutions.

Any organization can be subject to a discrimination suit. It does not need to be a governmental institution to be sued for discrimination.
