I'm pretty sure that I mentioned it before but I do believe that his name alone will turn off voters because it plays negative on the subconscious.

You know...you are probably correct. Which just leads me to wonder at the intelligence of the general population in the US. Maybe this is the reason the country is (or perceived as) going down the drain.

I saw an interesting story about this on some channel the other night. Apparently there is an email going around right now commenting about how he went to a fanatical muslim school growing up as a child and that he's a muslim. NONE of which is true.
Of course, there's no real way to find out where this started from, but you figure it either came from a hillary group person or a republican group person. Either stands to benefit the most so I think that's the obvious guess. It's really a shame there's no way to expose these people.

I really don't think that low intelligence is necessary to be fooled by the subconscious. For decades the American public has been swayed with subliminal advertising. The smoking industry was famous for this in the 50's and who can really say that it's not true? Whether it's a nice set of boobies in an ice cube or the proliferation of a names negative connotation it's as effective as any campaign strategy. Remember, they aren't trying to convince you he's a terrorist or a muslim...they are trying to get your subconscious mind to associate him with them so that candidate B looks that much better by comparison. They are making you inclined to go in a different direction.
If it works on moderately intelligent people imagine what it can do with all the idiots.

And the Democratic TV add that shows Bush smirking next to Romney/ McCain while there's a voice over of the candidate praising Bush and the camera merges Bush and the candidate together into Bush's face will run too.
By the end of this thing both parties will have run ads featuring the opposition's candidate bayonetting and barbequing Labrador puppies.
There's nothing new under the sun.

I think it's fairly safe to say that no matter how much money or charisma he has, Obama will not be getting the "ignorant bigot" vote. I guess the question is how large of a bloc that is still in 2008.
**** no! To borrow from Hunter S. Thompson, I'm not interested in finding out what the country would look like if the Nazis had won the war.
I understand your cynicism, Salty, but one thing worth considering is that unlike other minority candidates in the past, Obama has a tremendous amount of money on hand. That cash might not persuade the bigots, but it can be spent on a sophisticated media operation that can return fire against those smearing him, thus discrediting them. I don't think Obama is going to be swift-boated. One thing he showed with the underhanded Clinton tactics in South Carolina is that he can take a punch pretty well.
Hillary too. She's got a ton of money and she and her husband both know how to win elections by taking the low road.
There's a lot of bigotry out there, but in this day and age, I think $ is a more reliable maxim for success than race or gender.
