I've had the privilege the past 7 years following the hockey career of Brian Cooke. Many people who have played ice hockey here in Southern California have crossed paths with Brian at one time or another. In one week, Brian will be trying out for the Ontario Reign and I know I'm not the only one rooting for him to make the team.
Brian is 22 years old, 6'2", weighing in at 190 lbs.
Here is my interview with him:
Q. Brian, what first got you into hockey?
A. My parents got me a pair of ice skates and I never wanted to be off of them. Naturally thought hockey would be fun. Learned to skate at the Culver City Ice Rink
Q. What teams have you played for locally?
A. Marina Cities Ice Hockey Club for 2 years, then the Bay Harbor Red Wings for about 3 years. Went into my tiered career with the Westminster Wave. Ended my youth career with the Junior Kings AAA 18 & Under Team. After that, I went to play for the undefeated Phoenix Polar Bears.
Then graduated to the EJHL to the Bridgewater Bandits. While there I made the South All Stars Team. I was recruited by Wayne State at the All Star Game. Red shirted my freshman year at Wayne State. I now play in the Elite Adult league at TSC. (note: Wayne State disbanded the hockey program. Prompting Brian to return home)
Q. I have heard you've dome some things locally here to create interest in hockey. Care to share?
A. I started the Culver City High School Team.
Q. Brian, you work at Toyota Sports Center now. What do you do there?
A. I am a supervisor of operations there. I also work for the Kings with the Kings Chariot Events.
Q. When did you find out you would get a chance to tryout for the Reign.
A. Word came out about open tryouts. I spoke to Daryl Evans and other different people within the organization and they were extremely encouraging in me going out for the team.
Q. Did they tell you anything to work on for the tryouts?
A. They said to just play my game.
Q. As a player, who do you pattern yourself after?
A. I really just take it all in and do my own thing. I do like to watch Blake, Schneider, Niedermayer. Like the way the way they can be tough on the defensive end and be offensive minded as well.
Brian, wish you luck on your tryouts. Hope to talk to you after you make the team.
I was so happy when the Lakers got rid of Brian Cook.

I played on the Culver City High School team, but i saw this guy play and he can really skate from what i remember, he also worked his tail off playing for Culver because a lot of his teammates were fairly new to ice hockey.
I've had the pleasure of working with brian and getting him to come out and play some adult league games. He is great guy off the ice, and on the ice he is an extremely strong dude and a very powerful skater. I have a feeling he will do quite well.
