I love a rumor as much as the next person, truly. Nonetheless, I question Eklund’s source who suggested that Spezza and Emery will be traded to Los Angeles, much less the second rumor of a bundling of picks to move up to Stamkos. Lets start with the Kings’ current goaltending situation.
Yes; no doubt between the pipes that has really always been the Kings’ weakest link. That is no longer the case; it is the blue line where the organization has the least depth. In the wings battling for goaltending slots next season are Jason LaBarbera, Jonathon Quick, Jonathon Bernier, Jeff Zatkoff and if re-signed, Erik Ersberg.
Why would a team trying to build an organization from the net out trade for Emery, a guy who has that much baggage? That is an easy call; they wouldn’t.
As to trading up for Stamkos, riddle this. . . . .On defense, projected or at the NHL level are: Johnson, Preissing, Visnovsky, Harrold. At the AHL level is: Piskula, Petiot, Bagnall, Milam, Drewiske, Kidd, Likens. These are not exactly names that make a Kings’ fan drool, anything but that.
Robitaille recently stated as much at a media event that the Kings were drafting a defenseman with the #2 pick. I believe to my toes that Lombardi is relieved he doesn’t have the #1 pick. That would have been a PR nightmare until or unless he could have traded it for something truly sweet.
That is probably why Rich Hammond was so surprised when Robitaille recently stated that the team was picking a defenseman. Everyone thought this but Robitaille is the first to confirm it publicly.
‘Maybe the most interesting thing, at the beginning, is Robitaille's quote about the Kings drafting a defenseman. That's certainly no shock to anyone, but it's the first time anyone in the organization has outright said that a defenseman is on the way.”
So why would Lombardi bundle picks or assets to get Stamkos? Again, I don’t see it.
Lombardi was on XM this week with Esposito and implied that Cloutier would not be back. (An inference that makes me quite the happy camper.) Dean also discussed how LaBarbera will be given an opportunity to build off of what he did last year. More than once, Lombardi has flat out said he isn’t trading for a goaltender. The Kings aren’t close enough to being competitive to trade picks and prospects to win now. Period. Don’t take my word for it though, listen to the interview that was posted by Rink Rat over at letsgokings.com
As to Spezza, here too, Lombardi has publicly stated multiple times that the Kings’ budget takes into account re-signing the team’s core of Kopitar, Johnson and I believe O’Sullivan. If $8 million goes to Spezza, a member of the team’s core is gone. That possibility would make Lombardi look like the biggest tool since the first Bush president said, “Read my lips; no new taxes.” Boyle most likely is being in at the projected #2 center and at a whole lot less green than Spezza is making.
Everyone have at it – you have all heard my two cents…
Hi Carla; I like the way you write. As I was reading your post (and the contrarian that I am) a quote came to mind. No new taxes, then the next few paragraphs down you quote it. Too funny.
So with that said, I might add "It's one thing to know the path and another to walk it". So in my own nature I would do a one eighty on you with the "No New Taxes" and look for a tax hike.
I have my opinions like the next person but the last thing I would ever resort to is making negative comments about players or prospects as you are dealing with a fraternity here and some qualities may not fit right with one club but may be ideal for another. And all GM's are just as competitive in the board room as the players are on the ice.
BTW, isn't this how you spell "rumour"?
If a block buster deal is to be made, I am sure we will be the last ones to know. The question is, when is the time right? Are there WMD's? Who is spinning what here? We will never know.
As far as the Kings go, yeah they have depth, but they are in trouble. I don't see a stanley cup yet in the Kings future with what DL has built so far. Sure, making the playoffs is coming for the Kings but who wants to be the Calgary Flames? Or for that matter the SJ Sharks, a bunch of under achievers? Give me heart, Give me Stamkos (or Brendan Morrow).
Will DL (or his management) tip his hand. I expect not but I do expect mis direction. I posted twice last night and will copy/paste for further considersation.
Cheers

Dana, you are right, what the h3ll was I thinking! Oh yeah, that's it, the only thing that article did not mention is the LA Kings.
Remember, that is a piece written for Toronto fans. I am just stiring the pot on the idea that Stamkos can be had. I started doing this since the draft lottery. Back to the article. The article did mention many of the things that LA has to offer.
- 2nd over all pick... doughty, boggs, etc etc.
- even another late first round pick
- 7 goalies showcased during the 07-08 season. enie menie miny moe?!?
- plenty of trade bait (earlier comments, arsenal)
- hmmm, Kings to raise ticket prices this year - huh - Maybe DL has authorization to spend some heavy cash as well?
But you are right, it is all speculation, so I am just having fun. The idea does have merrit and some LA writers are starting to smell something in the air (check out insidesocal.com/kings). Certainly DL has the cards to do a deal, but does he have the moxy?
