Default Leiweke swings the axe

As expected, Dave Taylor has been relieved of his GM duties today after the Kings spiraled from first place in December to eventually miss the playoffs once again. He is expected to be retained in another position and still has a year on his contract. The team also fired the entire coaching staff.

Also, Kevin Gilmore, the Kings’ Vice President of Hockey Operations/Assistant General Manager, will be re-assigned within AEG, the parent company of the Kings. The announcement was made by Tim Leiweke at a noon press conference at the team's training facility

“I’m very grateful to Dave and appreciative of his 29 years of service to the Los Angeles Kings,” said Leiweke, who today held a press conference at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo to announce the changes. “He has been loyal to the Kings sweater from Day One and continues to be. We have offered him an opportunity to remain with the organization in a capacity to be determined. That decision is his, and will be dependent on his discussions in the future with our new leadership.”

"The team also fired the entire coaching staff."

These 8 words give me the most hope for next season.

The Kings cannot be as unskilled as their special teams appeared to be this past season. The majority of the problem has to be with the coaching.

What I don't like is the idea that they "fired" DT. It would look better if he said he resigned from the postion.

Jesus. Why don't we just clone Roy and bring Rocket Richard back from the dead while we're at it?

The thing I like the most is that Leiweke is stepping down as CEO. I think that may be the most important part of this transition.

unlikely...

Unfair as it may be, i believe he's associated with the dissension in the locker room that led to the monumental collapse. It's simply wonton scapegoating.

Look for Avery on a different team however. His services are always in demand.

It's sad as Avery brought so much excitement to this team, I think with another season under his belt he could play with more brains...

I know he's not the most popular guy and I'm not a big fan of him but we need Bertuzzi, A power forward. On a new team I think he would be right back to the way he was before the Moore Incident. I'd have to say that's who I am looking for this summer to come to LA. If we don't trade for or sign a top goalie this summer I also hope they give Garon and Labarbara another chance.
Just my 2 Cents.

Having moved to the USA last October and becoming a Kings fan straight away therefore being the new kid on the block just wanted to say that I am a big fan of Avery, guy has got the skills and passion to be a very good player, he just needs some better man management – would be great to see him back next year. As for the team as a whole, you just don’t go from good to bad overnight, think they have a good and skillful core of players that needs 3 or 4 good buys to make them consistent e.g defenseman, proven goal scorer. Get rid of JR and use his wages for 2 of the players!!

He's the opposite of a player like Allison, though. Allison gets frustrated and turns inward. Stops caring about the rest of the team, stops listening to the coach. Avery turns outward, lashing out at whatever is bothering him, LaRouque, Bettman, team mates, the coaching staff.

He is a ton a talent. He has speed, hands and vision. What he doesn't have is the "team player" attitude. If you put Norstrom's attitude with Avery's talent he would be a 50 goal/ 100 point player. He is tough and annoying, things that make him an effective player. What he isn't is tactful, which makes him tough to live with. He's like the embarrasing cousin that always says the wrong thing, and gets the family pissed off.

I wish him well were ever the Kings send him. We will qualify him, and then trade his rights for a bag of chips and Panger's home phone number.

As I've said before, I think we have the right players, it was just a matter of getting the right coaching staff. Only time will tell but it seems as if they are on their way.
