The Kings have traded center Eric Belanger and defender Tim Gleason to the Carolina Hurricanes for the rights to defenseman Jack Johnson (the third overall pick [behind Sidney Crosby and Bobby Ryan] in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft), plus defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky.
“We felt the opportunity to acquire Jack Johnson was something we couldn’t pass up as we continue to search for ways to upgrade this franchise,” said Kings GM Dean Lombardi. “This move required that we give up two good players, but has the potential to help us in the near future as well as for many years to come.”
Jack Johnson is a tough young defenseman who has been compared to Chris Chelios. He chose to return to college (Michigan-CCHA) this year instead of going pro, and apparently the Hurricanes don't have much patience.
Oleg Tverdovsky is an offensive defenseman who has two years left on his contract at 2.5 million per season.
Said Lombardi: “Oleg Tverdovsky is a proven NHL defenseman who adds to our veteran mix on the back end.”
according to hockeysfuture.com/prospect/jack_johnson
Jack Johnson came into the spotlight while spending two years at Shattuck-St. Mary’s prep school, where he played with his good friend and future phenom, Sidney Crosby. He went on to play with the U.S. NTDP during the 2003-04 season. He continued with Hockey USA and the development program for 2004-05 where he was among the best defenders in the system for the second year running and led all defensemen in scoring during that span. Johnson has also seen international competition, playing in the 2004 IIHF World U-18 Championships in Minsk, Russia. Over the course of the 2004-05 season, he helped Team USA to commanding tournament sweeps at the Five Nations Tournament, Compuware Four Nations Cup and the U-18 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships.
Unbelievable trade...I think it will be very good in the long run. Got to give something to get something, but losing Belly hurts (he's been here for so long), as does losing Gleason (although you're probably right about him, Stix).
Tverdovsky is, of course, very talented, but also tends to fall of the face of the earth from time to time. Probably just thrown in to make up for the loss fo Gleason in the D-corps.
Johnson sounds like he was the key piece of the trade. A 3rd overall pick defenseman with loads of talent and an edge to his game...not bad.
I'm think we're beginning to see a pattern with Lombardi (which, given his record in SJ, shouldn't be a surprise) of being able to pull off trades for prospects who are as close to "sure-fire" as prospects can be.

Losing Belanger doesn't hurt at all. This team wasn't going anywhere this year with him or without him.
Getting rid of Belanger means that Kopitar is going to get to play in the NHL this season. We didn't need another season of Belanger sitting out 20+ games due to injury.

Dean Lombardi made an awsome trade that I think is not going to hurt do to the team we have now or future wise. This is just one of them moves that Lombardi is known of doing since being in SJ as their GM at the time being and I hope to we see alot more, as I'm sure we all will too.
When you lose someone like Gleason in a trade, I thought it's sad to see because well I thought Gleason was a great defenseman for the Kings who plays a strong game, maybe not offensively acourse. But He will be fine in Carolina though I'm sure of, that we will see him probably being in the All-Star game this up-coming season lol. As for Belanger I don't care for him. He has an attitude (who's bagged on the management and team this past off-season, I believe so) and pretty much injury prone too. His speed and wins on face-offs will be missed though, that's it.
If you look at what this team has as centreman and defensemen down the lines it's:
Conroy>C
Armstrong>C
McCauley>C/LW
Kopitar>C/RW
Avery>C/LW
Cammelleri>C/RW
O'Sullivan>C/LW
Lewis>C
Boyle>C (Even though not in the AHL, yet)
Blake>D
Dallman>D
Miller>D
Norstrom>D
Sopel>D
Tverdovsky>D
Visnovsky>D
Weaver>D
J. Johnson>D
Baier>D
Harrold>D
Petiot>D
So this team does have depth at center, that we do have centreman like Conroy, McCauley, and Avery? as great centreman who can win them key faceoffs when needed. As for the D-corpse. There is straight depth in the line-up, and in manchester incase need to call D-mens like Weaver or Petiot on up, that we got them.
Jack Johnson, WOW just awsome. I can't wait until I see him in a Kings uni. This is just a shocker for me still knowing the Kings got him, and not the other team that wanted him that was highly speculated of him going to (can't think of what team it was).
Hot Damn! Jack Johnson possibly in a Kings uni! Nice job, DL. Might have to wait a year or two for the kid, since it seems he wants to continue his college career, but, that's OK. He's ours for now. As for Tverdovsky, he has some defensive lapses, but, has a wicked shot from the point. Might benefit the power play.
Hate losing Gleason. I love that guy. He's got the tools to make for a good D-man for a long time to come. Losing Belanger only hurts in the sense that he's a decent faceoff guy. Hope he & Tim do well in the East.
All in all, I'd say it's a "B" grade for now. "A" grade if Johnson signs long term. Not a bad present for my 35th birthday today. Looking forward to next week!

Deano is the man. I like this trade a lot. Finally we have an aggressive GM with a big pair to do things like this. You go Deano.....keep going until the team is raising the cup...
I thought Timmy G would be our next captain. This one stings. Belanger was expendable with the logjam at center. In the end this one ends up being a question of Gleason vs Johnson. I hope Johnson pans out. He obviously has a lot of expectations and hype surrounding him whereas Gleason is the guy nobody has heard of with no pressure on him. Time will tell I guess. So long Timmy. We'll miss you in section 301!
I just hope that Deano spoke to him before the trade. If he intends on finishing school, he will go right back into the draft.
