About This Page: This is a discussion on News within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Per Andy Strickland of 1380 ESPN and Hockey Buzz, reports in his latest blog:
“Sources say the LA Kings will select Guelph D-man Drew Doughty with the 2nd overall pick.”
The next best thing to Kings' fans other than the Daily News' Rich Hammond would have to be the Daily News' Don Fulton who has been getting the best interviews with Kings' prospects and draft picks. Read an excerpt from Fulton's Doughty interview:
"Question: Can you tell the readers who haven’t had the chance to see you play what your playing style is as a defenseman?
Doughty: I’m more of an offensive-defenseman. This year I’ve really worked on becoming more of a two-way player. I’ve become a lot better in the defensive zone, I like to take the body and hit a lot and I like to get the job done. I’ll do anything to get the job done, whether it is blocking shots or whatever it takes. My main thing is I like to jump into the play a lot and I like to run the power play – those are my two most favorite things to do."
"Question: If you could select any team in the NHL to take you come draft day, who would it be?
Doughty: Right now I would honestly have to say that it would be L.A. because I see where they are in the standings and I know obviously it is a great place to play and everyone loves it there, I mean it is kind of different there, you get to show up to the rink in shorts and a t-shirt and that would be awesome. And with them being low in the standings I would hope that I could maybe get into their system quicker than maybe a team that is higher up in the standings. It would just be a great place to go and a great fit."
I know Doughty is a no brainer, but the article says that several scouts are saying that Schenn is comaparable to Scott Stevens. I've said in previous threads that a Stevens type of player is exactly what this franchise needs. I'm not saying that DL should take Schenn over Doughty, but maybe he can find a way to trade up and get a pick that could get Schenn (or Bogosian). It would cost some assets, but it may well be worth the price. And he should trade Preissing. Maybe package him with the midget?

I agree with you. The Kings have Visnovsky and Johnson -- in theory, two offensive defensemen. This team needs a Stevens type more. I have already done the research to do a blog on Schenn and was pretty impressed with what I read and found.
I'm well overdue in thanking you for your blog and the perspective that it provides. Massive Karma to you! Since we aren't going to suck bad enough to have a shot at Hedman next draft, I would like to see DL make a move for another top five pick. At worst Pietrangelo would be available, although I'm not really sold on him from what I've seen. Maybe it's just me. After Doughty it's all about Schenn and Bogosian. Ultimately, it comes down to finding the best trading partner that has the pick. Even Nashville, which has Florida's pick (#6, I think). Maybe Nashville wants to keep that pick and DL can get Weber or Suter with a package. Definitely need some nasty on the blueline, especially with Lubo, Preissing, Harrold, Hickey, etc playing D.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. There's no guarantee that any of those draftees will make the NHL. It also looks like a lot of offense for a team that needs more defense. And how exactly would we acquire both Doughty and Schenn?
At the end of a <.500 season the Kings could have 300+ goals with the help of a defensive core that had -30's for their +/-.
I really hope that it does work out, but I've been excited and then disappointed too many times with this team. This last season is an example. The signing of the six...
There are few guarantees, other than a Crosby, Ovechkin, E. Johhson, etc. There is no guarantee that Bernier will make it either, but my guess is he will. I said if DL can get another top 5 pick and get a guy like Schenn it would be good move. But DL would have to find the right trading partner, and hopefully he will. If he discovers that he has no trading partners to get two top 5 picks, then I'm fine only getting Doughty.
