I know that this season will be long. That there will probably be more lows than highs, and that once again, we will be rooting against the teams we hate, rather than for the team we love in april, may and june. Over the last five years, and lets be honest, probably a lot earlier than that, this team has become a team that we love to hate, rather than a team that we simply love. And Let's be honest here, this team has shown us shockingly little love in return.
There has been a lot of disappointment and a lot of betrayal throughout the kings existence. being a kings fan is a miserable, miserable lot. And so when i see those new NHL ads that ask, "is this the year" I feel the romantic in me raise his head, only to be summarily bitch slapped into submission by my more reasonable pessimistic side, as i shout inside, "no friggin way."
There is however, something the pessimist in me can't touch. For whatever reason, I find myself actually hopeful this year. Granted, as a sports fan, the beginning of the season is always a time of hope. And granted the Kings always find away of kicking me right in the nuts for allowing such a silly emotion such as hope to overcome any logical aversion to torture that I might have. And being a kings fan is torture.
But I have an overactive case of Stockholm syndrome I guess, as I can't help but loving the thing that repeatedly gives me so much pain. It's tragic really. And pathetic this abusive relationship with one of the world's most inept franchises. And each year, the Kings players, coaches, management, owners, and marketing department reach out, say they are sorry (albeit typically in a transparently insincere manner) and that they will never do it again and that they need me in their lives. And each year, I accept them back into my life knowing that they will just do it all again. I know that I will never be free from this cycle of violence, unless of course the Kings change for I am utterly and totally dependent on them. I cannot go and find another team. I know that I cannot go out and form a healthy attachment to the good guy/girl that is the Detroit Red Wings or the Montreal Canadiens, or some other storied franchise that, say what you will about how they rape their fans for every dime, at least put out every once in a while. I know, and they know this too, that it's inevitably, ultimately, and unapologetically the Kings. Like I said, its tragic. And pathetic.
But as I said I find myself once again excited and once again hopeful. Not because I think that this is the year (am I learning my lesson?). But because despite the pain, there is some pleasure to be had by watching my woeful kings. So please forgive this extended prelude. Here are ten reasons, in no particular order, that I will be watching the kings this season.
1) Come backs. You know the team will give up goals, but they have the naivete, the balls, and the hunger to take it back.
2) Youth. This whole team is young and with youth comes bravado, imagination, and a lack of fear. They may young, dumb, and full of...gatorade, but these kids are exciting and fun to watch.
3) LGK. Some of you may piss me off from time to time, but like a good ol' All-American dysfunctional family, you all are a bunch of enablers. Bastards.
4) Dean Lombardi. How is it that someone can say so little while saying so much, but still say a lot. If your head hurts after reading that, then you know how I feel when I read/listen to DL. Nonetheless, I love what he is doing for this team.
5) Prospects. This team is going to be good sooner rather than later. Which means more of #s 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 and 10.
6) Bob Miller and Jim Fox. Call me a homer, call me Sally, call me whatever you want, but for my money there no better duo in hockey and maybe even in professional sports. Fox has trouble with verbal diarrhea, and he can be obvious at times, but between the two of them they always call things as they see them, and make the game easier to understand and more enjoyable to watch.
7) Moller, Simmonds, and Doughty. Do they make the team? Do they go back to juniors/Manchester? One of the more interesting story lines in the early goings of the season, I can't wait to see how these three do.
8) Booms and busts. Who will have breakout seasons this year, and who will bust? Who will thrill me, who will kill me?
9) Brown. He's the captain. He hits like a truck. I can't wait to see who his first victim is against the boards and in the net. Will this year be the year when his patented toe drag through his legs will actually result in a goal?
10) Anze. What needs to be said? Every time he is on the ice I get excited at what might happen.
And so my fellow Kings fans, I end this fickle attempt at justifying my continued participation in this most abusive of engagements. I must now prepare myself, get out my knee pads, and grease up my ass, for on Saturday, the annual cycle of violence begins anew. It's tragic. And pathetic.
Go Kings!

we get it. the kings suck. a lot of people on these boards are smoking crack if they think the kings are going to make the playoffs. thank you captain obvious for keeping expectations in the basement where they belong.

The Kings do achieve the unlikely come back from time to time. They also blow leads as well so it really equals out.

Hopefully.

Hugely disagree with you here, but your preamble was worth it. Now bend over.

Once again... hopefully.

I'll call you a homer AND a Sally for that one. I never know if I'm laughing with Fox, or at him. (Actually I do. I laugh at him) His inflection is one of a kind.

I agree.

For sure. The best part is laughing at all the LGKer's that think all our prospects are somehow better than the thousand other nobodies in the NHL and AHL.

Brown's the man.

No wait, Anze's the man. Seriously, what hope would there be without these two?

Like sitting on a bicycle with no seat, it's going to be worse than you can imagine.
hmm...here are my top 3 for watching on my couch:
1) i dont have money to blow on something that will greatly frustrate me, never meet my expectations, and will ultimately make me sad. And no, im not talking about the ex girlfriend.
2) I'd rather fall asleep in my own bed, rather than staples center, after a 2nd period meltdown where the kings are down by 5.
3) beer is a hell of a lot cheaper anywhere outside staples center. and i dont need to worry about driving home =)
