The problem with pizza in California is that it just cannot taste the same as back east pies.( Welcome ) These guys come the closest. But on a really good pizza all you need is cheese, sauce and that nice wafer thin crust with that sandy pizzaoven bottom. All the rest is a distraction.

My place is a East Coast franchise called Fox's Pizza Den (Fox's Pizza Den). I have 2. One in Murrieta (near Temecula), and one in East Highlands (near the 10 Fwy on your way to Palm Springs). I really do apprieciate all the feed back. I'm testing this new pizza that is getting really good reviews so far, let me know what you guys think:
Chicken and Garlic:
Sauce the dough with garlic butter
Diced up chicken breast
green onions
mushrooms
tomatoes
top with 4 cheeses
On thin crust, bake till crispy.
The smell is absolutley intoxicating for garlic lovers.

Try adding another type of meat if your home office will allow it.
I vote for Portuguese Sausage/linguica.
I just hit up a local NY style place near me for a whole pie. Bronx Pizza in Mission Hills, SD.
I got the Porko...Pepperoni, Sausage and Meatball. Add a little tobasco, fold the slice and grind.
My favorite is Pepperoni & Jalapenos with extra cheese.
survey says..........
Ding ding ding ding....... number 1 answer.
I LOVE me some Jalapeno & pep pizza, best is if the Jalapeno's are full of seeds and when baked the whole damn thing is spicy. perfect for a little added ranch dipping (not dunking)

There aren't many places that offer andouille sausage as a topping around here so I have to go with the inferior and blah tasting sausage to go with the pepperoni...

Pineapple & Jalapenos on thick crust. Crust should be cooked thoroughly, providing a good crunch with a hint of it being burnt. Light on the cheese and heavy on the marinara.
I absolutely cannot stand thin crust pizza.

Yep, I already mentioned Bronx Pizza here, but it got wiped out in the purge yesterday. My point was, though, that I'm a big pizza fan, and like a simple NY style cheese pie slice, and BP is a great place to get one in SD.
But I don't discriminate, liking also Chicago style, California style, and everything in between (as long as its good).
As far as toppings, of everything i tried, my favorite is a double onion pizza at The Venetian in Point Loma in SD. It has a fairly thin (but not foldable) crispy crust, great homemade tomato sauce, loads of cheese, and a mound of sweet thinly sliced onions, half of which melt into the cheese creating this sweet cheesy oniony heaven, and part of which crisp up nicely on top for a bit of smokeyness. Heaven.
Salami is my #1 choice if I had to choose just one topping. Pepperoni, sausage and meatballs are also high on the list. Lots of cheese, light on the sauce and the thicker the dough the better. NY style pizza sucks.

Hey Vegas, if you really are in Vegas, you have like 6 Fox's around you. Different owner, of course, but still a good guy. The house special on almost all crust is meduim hand tossed, but we can make either way (thick, or thin).
I have had an alot of people requesting cashews, anybody up for this. I did get the cashews for them, I have a Staters right next to me in Highland, but they are an 'oiley' nut, so the pizza came out soaked in what looked like greese.
