Default Seal Beach-Nicks Diner vs Little Burrito Jr

The family is out of town so Psychopuck and I went out boozing on friday and decided to get a breakfast burrito in the AM.

We did a quick search and found some reviews and this one in particular cracked us up regarding Little Burrito Jr.

The lady at the window was impatient. Apparently you can build your own breakfast burrito here, and not many people ask for recommendations. I did, and after some heavy sighing, she suggested I try the chorizo and egg burrito.

So with that in mind we figured we try this place. We get there at 9:30AM saturday....at the sign says Cerrado(closed). We get a chuckle and indeed the door to enter the location is locked. We walk a bit further to the walk up window and right at the closed window we see a women talking on the phone. I walk up to the window a few feet away from this lady hoping to get some type of response. Im thinking maybe she say "Sorry were closed until 10) or better yet "Were just opening so give us a couple of minutes" or maybe even "why can I get you?"

But we got none of that...in fact the women sat talking on the phone looking at me with a stupid look on her face. After the initital couple of moments I realized this women wasnt going to give us any info so I decided to see how long she would simply look at me from the window while talking on the phone. Sure enough after a couple of minutes she finally hangs up the phone and then walks away!

After reading the OC Registers review above I couldnt help but think how comical the whole incident was. We chuckled and walked down to Nicks.

We got in and got our order placed fairly quickly which was good because after we ordered it was a nonstop flow of people. There were tons of call in orders...much more then walk in orders. And the burrito was very very good. I ordered extra cheese only to find it was completely unnecessary as the standard burrito comes with plenty of cheese. Its a low key kind of place that is making a killing as the food is really good and there were plenty of locals there.

Anyhow thats my story....a Tale of Two Businesses-one successful, and one not so successful for obvious reasons.

I'm not a fan of Breakfast Burritos but they make awesome sandwiches, their Reuben is my favorite. Nicks has opened a second location on Los Alamitos Blvd, just north of Katella (Corner of Los Al & Florista), it's been open less than 6-months and every time I go it's packed.

Yeah we spent a good deal of time reading the Wall of Sandwiches and everyone of them looked good. I wish I could live in Seal Beach...they've got a lot of good restaurants on Main St.

I knew there must be a reason why I never see anyone at Little Burrito Jr.

Being right on the Beach and all you would have to assume their rent is way more expensive then Nicks right? The question is-How can a place with a prime location that treats customers like crap stay open? Is this another case of the "Stick and Stein" factor?

The wife and I have been going to Seal Beach for meals the last 3 weekends.

Hennesey's Eggs Benedict is pretty good but the lunch sandwiches are average.

The bakery across the street from Seal Beach music is rad. Good stuff. Cinnamon rolls are plain (no raisins) but great with the frosting they pour on 'em. The brownies rock.

The Mimi's at Los Alamitos Bay is one of the better ones. The Jambalaya Pasta is better than the one in Downey and the servers are nicer.

Yeah! Sweet Jill's (note to myself: think Lou Reed Sweet Jane). That's the name of the bakery.

Pecan sticky buns eh??? I'm gonna order a few of them next time. The Apple Puffs (????) are tasty too.

Sweet Jill's is great. Cinnamon Productions has really dropped down with the new owners. I haven't been down there as much, since my friend has been having his house rebuilt for the past year. He'll be moving back in next month, so I'll be spending much more time in Seal Beach very soon.

Other places I like: Slice of New York Pizza, Javatini and Taco Surf.

The prices at Sweet Jills have gone up a bit but its still worth every penny.

We ate at Taco Surf last night. The Pipeline Asada burrito and Chicken tamale were dissapointing. The burrito was too dry and no guacamole. The tamale was too breaded.

The meatball soup (abodonza or whatever it's called) and chicken taco were excellent.

Next time we are going to try the Shrimp Chowder and taquito's and chicken plate.

They must be Lykis 101 listeners and have mistaken women with customers?

We split it, poured some of the icing on 'em and heated. It was sweet enough. We shouldn't have put the icing on. Other than that absolutely scrumptious.
